As i understand it Dawn of War II has two standalone expansion packs. I'm thinking about buying the game, but i don't know if i should go for Retribution alone, just the first (to start off) or the complete pack. I've played the demo and know i like the game, but i know little about what the expansion packs brings to the table.

Can the good people of this forum give me their honest opinion about the game and the expansion packs? It would be hugely helpful.
Just go straight for Retribution, it has the most content. Dawn of War 2 and Chaos Rising have good stories and Cyrus has his own fanfiction now he's that badass but for value you can't beat Retribution.
Only the second expansion is standalone.

Get the base game and the first expansion. In my opinion they are better than the second expansion where the developers changed the character advancement much. If you want co-op play, you will either need the second expansion or the The Last Standalone DLC, which is only the co-op part of the second expansion.

Do you want SP or MP?
If you mainly want it for MP, you can just get Retribution. You don't even need original game.
If you want the SP campains, I'd go with all 3.

I've always just played SP but I'm slowly starting to get into MP now. I've actually NEVER played an RTS online. :P

Should be about time. It's looking like the complete pack is the way to go.. ?

Well, then yeah. I recommend playing through the SP campaigns then playing the Last Stand co-op.
Retribution is the best since it ditched GFWL.

For Dawn o war 2 & Chaos Rising, The SP campaign really has no relation gameplaywise to MP.
Retribution SP does introduce the untis & concepts of MP.
The Last Stand (Also available on its own) is Great.
Go with DoW II Retribution. You'll get the latest for the best MP experience. Compared to the original DoW II and Chaos Rising, Retribution's campaign is generally better because it has more variety.
NIce.

By the way. Can anyone tell me if buying the game via Impulse will give me a Steam-key or if I'll have to use the Client. I hate the client!

They all use Steamworks as DRM so yes you get a Steam key. DOW2 and Chaos Rising have GFWL whereas Retribution uses just Steam for online and cloud features.
Don't forget to apply the coupon SURVEY2010 if you are buying off Impulse.

Direct2Drive is selling DoW II Retribution for $20. If you can find a 20% coupon, it will be cheaper than on Impulse even with the SURVEY2010 10% coupon.
Argh.. I didn't see your post in time, Zenphic. Got it off impulse. I was going to go for the Complete pack from D2D but was told that they didn't serve my kind there, and thus had to go elsewhere for my WH40k-fix.

I got it for 107kr, so I'm not complaining either way. If anyone wants to play Retribution please PM me. I only have one friend on Steam who owns the game, and complete strangers intimidate me. :P

Say what? The retribution campaign was basically the same for every race, usually played over the same maps against the same enemies. Its certainly still worth playing but its nothing like as good as chaos rising.

Aint that the truth. It was Dragon Age 2 all over again.
