The inspiration for the realistic turn that the Police Quest series took starting with Open Season, and then moving onto the SWAT series, passed away. For those who don't know, Chief Gates was the primary inspiration for the 4th Police Quest game, taking it from being set in a fictional city, to going into the very real, gritty world of being an LAPD Homicide detective. He also had a helping hand in creating the SWAT series, which evolved into the SWAT 3 and 4 that we all know and love.
Despite some criticisms, it is because of him that we have arguably the best Police Quest game made (Open Season) and the basis for the SWAT series, which has always stuck to realism and police procedures.
My condolences, even though I've never played the PQ games.
I am sorry the guy is dead, but don't sugarcoat it and make it sound like his being the inspiration for the PQ games somehow offsets the fact that the guy was a raging racist and had some of the most extreme views on the "war on drugs" of anyone in law enforcement (his idea: all drug users, even casual users, should be shot as traitors to America).

So what you are saying is because he had different opinions on matters, he was a bad person.
Nah, I don't buy it.
I invoke Godwin's Law!
Or: the same can be said about Hitler then.

LOL funny.
Still, no one here is talking about Hitler. :p

Nope, I never said that, just that some incidental involvement in a video game is not the most important thing to remember about the man and that some of the more important things to remember might be taken just a bit negatively. Then again, if you are also a raging racist who thinks all drug users should be shot on sight, you might not.

So I have to be a raging racist if I am against drugs? The only one calling names here is you. I am sure Gates had his view on the world, including drugs and perhaps he was racist, I don't claim to have met the man. But for someone to make a thread about him dying and wishing RIP because he played a role in some computer games, and then you coming here and spit on his name is really not nice.
You should learn to respect others opinions even when they are against your own, and also to respect the dead.

I do respect others opinions, but not those opinions that exist thanks to ignorance and solely for the sake of fomenting unrest between people. Gates is generally reviled for his racist views (he once tried to explain deaths caused by the LAPD's use of choke holds against black people by saying "blacks might be more likely to die from chokeholds because their arteries do not open as fast as they do on normal people.") and his greatest achievement: failing to stop the 1992 LA riots. In fact, some would go so far as to say that he and his policies were largely responsible for the events that led to those riots. His involvement in the video game industry does not mean he deserves any special recognition that discounts his other issues in life, just because he died. As I said, I am sorry he died, and my condolences to the family, but beyond that, see the man as a whole before you judge him.
Also, as long as we are handing out unsolicited advice, before you go criticizing others for what they say, you should at least make a token effort to inform yourself of the subject at hand, you may find that your tolerance of Gates' opinions will change a bit.
Well, sad, as all death usually are. My condolences.
It won't [and shouldn't] change my mind about Mr Gates, though. And i'll still prefer the older PQ games over Open Season, seeing them as superior adventures..
Indeed most people here are too young to remember the whole Rodney King/LA riots conflagration. Not that Rodney King himself was a saint.

You just don't get it, do you?
You continue to make assumptions on what I know and what not, but that is irrelevant. What matters is that a man died, someone said RIP thread for his involvement in GAMES (my guess we are all gamers here), and you come and talk shit about him. The man died, show some respect. Do you still not get it?
trusteft: Calm the f...k down, will You?

Oh, I do get, but what you fail to get is this may be a man that is not deserving of the respect you are so concerned about, beyond the natural respect for the family of the deceased. I am not talking shit at all about him, I am stating the facts that you seem to know absolutely nothing about. The man was a racist, he was responsible for the policies that led to the LA riots, he did actually say all drug users should be "taken out and shot". This is not shit, it is fact, plain and simple. I could spend all day reciting the facts about this man, some good (he did create D.A.R.E.) but most of them would be bad. The fact that he also was involved in video games and just happened to die recently does not excuse that.

No you don't get it, or you just don't care about being disrespectful to the dead. Either way no reason to continue this discussion.
