SimonG: Wow, played for an hour.

I usually never use the term "bad console port", but this is just ridiculous. I never had anything so shoddy on my HD in a very long time. Also, while I like GFWL in general it recently has made a habit of taking my system settings for the language. And the German translation isn't helping.

Also, unresponsive controls (gamepad) stupid artificial difficulty.

I like the atmosphere and story, the "find it yourself" approach. But that's about it.

I'm giving it another try with DSfix.

Conculusion: So far waste of twenty bucks. Well, at least I got 30 GS ...
Vanilla, the PC version is horrible, especially without x360 controller.
But with DSFix and 360 controller, PC version is flawless and amazing. One of the best games of the year.

The DSfix helped a lot. It also changed the language.

Yet, I'm done with the game. The sluggish and shitty combat and controls (with Xbox 360 pad) just pissed me off. It feels like playing drunk character. If the tutorial messages give wrong advice, I'm done.

Fallen to the hype, should have known better....

I can understand your feeling. I started to play San Andreas recently and it is locked to something like 20 frames pr second? At first it felt really bad and took out a lot of the enjoyment of the reckless highspeed driving, but then I got used to it and now it just feels good. I know there is a mod to fix the frame limit, but it is supposed to be problematic for the physics in the game.

It's not the frame limit, it is literally EVERYTHING ELSE with the graphics. But the DSfix really helped. Visuals are no longer the problem. But the game itself.

Ok, bad port then I guess :-( May the deity bless those talented modders then.

I expected you to enjoy this game but try the FPS limiter in DSfix, if you run it at 60FPS (I'm not sure if it's optional) the engine will run twice as fast as default when it's at 30FPS. However, with the increase of internal resolution with DSFix this may cause slowdowns anyway but it's worth a try.
From what I read the PC port was developed in-house, that could explain why the port was so bad. Hopefully the PC version of the next Souls game will be outsourced to some Western developer that have more experience with PC games.

Why do you say its Artificial Difficulty? I hate that word sometimes because to me, there is no such thing as Fair challenge just brutal, agonizing, faliure inducing, bullshit hard.

So tell me, what games do you deem as HARD but fair?

I'm currently playing Orcs Must Die 2. This for example. Same as the prequel. Also, Spec: Ops on highest difficulty.

Tropico 4 was also challenging at time but manageable with preparation.

Also the Thief games on expert. Metro 2033 and RAGE (actually most id shooter) on the higher/highest difficulties.

There are many, many games with good, high difficulty. But Dark Souls uses the old NES style difficulties which are no longer suitable for games.

It's completely suitable if, like me, you're into that kind of thing, it's just (perhaps, understandably) not as popular. :)

Combat sluggish and shitty with a pad? I know the game isn't perfect but of all criticism this one has me a bit stumped, my experience is quite the contrary.

How does the tutorial give wrong advice?

SimonG: Metro 2033
That's an excellent example. On the highest ranger difficulty, that game was tough as nails, but it was always fair and fun.
Dark Souls probably has the least amount of artificial difficulty out of any modern RPG game since it's mostly all based on a players hand/eye coordination and reflexes. You can beat the entire game with all of the items that you start with and without leveling at all solely based on your reaction timing.
