Antaniserse: Quitting and reloading, as suggested, should do the trick; it happened the exact same thing to me in that spot, and i didn't even know it was supposed to drop a bow..... I came back in the zone, days later, and saw the yellow drop on the ground by pure chance: the bow and hat were there
Yup worked for me. Had a heart attack but now it is all good.

I think I will just continue and do some farming...

SimonG: I did. Still no "load game" button. :-(
I don't know then... i did it once, and it worked just fine; i don't know about you, but in my case was the very last backup from a few minutes ago, I've never tired to restore an older backup with, for example, a different file date.... it may be the GFWL cheat protection system reacting badly
Anybody knows how to get the MP working better?

I see countless summoning signs, yet every time I'm trying a summon I get a "summon failed". It worked occasionally so far. I got my ports forwarted and upnp activated. GFWL says NAT is open and upnp is working.

I'm not going to beat the Executioner and the Dragonhunter alone ...

Is the game running at a steady 30 frames for you? Because IIRC if it dips below 20 for more than 20 seconds, the connections fail, or something.

Also, connecting iS pretty bad on the ps3 version as well.
I thought that most of the time when it says a summoning failed it's because someone else summoned them first or they removed their sign.

Take Solaire, he's a summonable NPC you can find his sign near the stairs where the archer is.

When you have him, take Ornstein out first and it should be a manageable fight.

Again, thanks for the tips everybody:

After some diligent research (that is what I do after-all) I found some neat "tweaks"

1. Only summon one player at a time. Wait until either one player has arrived or summoning has failed.

2. If this doesn't work for like three times. Quit the game (ingame wait to the main menu, not out of game quit) and re-enter the game.

Those two tips actually worked for me now, and I have defeated those two dreaded bosses!

This game is growing on me. SL 52

Currently wielding a +3 Elec Washing Pole. +8 Elite Knight Armor + the rest is Silver knight stuff. Some even progressed as I used twinkling titanite as a "souls saver" in case I died.

You're just going to have to keep trying. Not sure why but this is a problem for all the versions. It's partly probably the other player. People can beat you to the summon, it's quite easy to wonder out of the summoning area, maybe they quite. Well one part that, more parts just weird connection issues.

Yeah, Dark Souls has always had connection issue and yeah, it really sucks. I find there're some days where every single summon sign fails and some where I can summon 100% consistently.
Does anybody know a program with which I can easily compare armour?

I've got a HUGE collection now and want to know what is best (especially after upgrades).

Also, considering my initial reaction to this game I can now give out a full recommendation. There are still some cheap issues and some design flaws. But the more you progress the more forgiving the game gets. And the non-linear exploration is one of a kind on the PC.

It reminds me a lot of the first two Gothic games.

Glad to see your opinion's turned around so much. Yeah, there're definitely some cheap moments but it is still an awesome game. The beginning's definitely the biggest hump.

As for comparing armor, you can use a Wiki or the Dark Souls character builder, but I don't think there are any programs for directly comparing one set of armor to another. I actually never bothered upgrading armor, as I like to switch sets depending on my mood, and I never had an issue for my first playthrough. You can probably do fine without upgrading armor and just experimenting. Keep in mind that there are specific Poise "breakpoints" where you're able resist stronger types of attacks. I believe 56 is the first notable one, where you aren't staggered by a one-handed Claymore strike.

Isn't that the same for all RPGs:

you start off at level 1 and its brutal, but the more you progress the easier the game is.

You can use this but there's no real program to compare them though. That I know of at least.

http://www.raymondhill.net/darksouls/darksouls-armor-calc.php Don't know if the DLC stuff is now in but the armors from it aren't that good.

The most important thing about amor is the poise the defense is rather neglectable.
