Gazoinks: Out of curiosity, how far are you? You're talking about pits everywhere, so are you at Blighttown yet? Good to hear it has grown on you from your intial impression at least, though. :)
Yup, Blightown. Just the beginning. After some cheap death by the Gaping Dragon (he grabbed while he was on all legs I was attacking his hind-leg. That is the general problem. Due to the limited field of you view, you don't see the bosses movement. It is mostly guesswork and "trail and error".

Please don't tell me the whole damn place is just rafters !?!?!?!

Did you get the Drake Sword?

Nah, after you make your way down you end up in a swamp. Blighttown is also by far the worst as far as falling to your death goes. There're only a few other places where it's much of a danger. (Speaking of which, I remember the other somewhat poorly balanced part: the Dragon Greatbow Archers in Anor Londo. Fun.)

and if you did, whatever you do don't upgrade it. Upgrade normal weapons instead, the Drake Sword has no scaling so it's not worth upgrading. An upgraded normal will surpass it.

Jup. Got it more by accident than anything else. I found a sign by another player saying "shoot the tail" And I did. A few shots with the combosite bow later I had it. I was already using a +7 Longsword, so it wasn't that big a benefit. But for the time being, it is ok.

What I really, really love is the non-linearity of the game. Exploring a bit New Londo, than trying the catacombs (bad idea), crawling through the Dephts or the Darkroot area. Or going back to the asylum. Also, the game is great at hint dropping (unlike, say, a proper manual).

That information was actually what got me further into the game. After countless RPGs I always held of on upgrading "standard" stuff. Until I realized that is one of the purposes of the game. It really made traversing the levels easier when you one-hit kill the average skeleton.

I also like the Longsword most as a weapon so far. The drake sword has no thrust, which sucks big-time. But at the moment it is slightly better. And it can't be "fused" with temporary buffs. Once I got enough resources I will go +10 on my longsword.

Yeah, the Longsword is one of the more well-balanced weapons in the game. Good moveset, good speed, decent damage. If you want a longer equivalent, maybe pick up an Uchigatana. Similar moveset, but considerably longer. Although the Drake Sword's two-handed Strong Attack is cool. Not super useful, but cool.

And yeah, the Metroidvania-style nonlinearity is really nice. Sometime I need to try the Catacombs early on: Start as a Priest with the Master Key, grab the Sword of Astora (Divine longsword), march my way through the Catacombs, kill boss, get Rite of Kindling, have tons of Flasks for the first part of the game. Might not be worth the effort, although the boss of the Catacombs is pretty pathetic.

personally I love the zweihander, a bit slow but with a single tap on the R2 trigger most mooks will kiss the floor.

On NG+ i'm mostly using the Black Knight Greataxe, the only useful attack is the one-handed light swing but with a lot of strength it does sting quite a bit.

Also you got this far, don't quit now and miss out on the opportunity to visit the funhouse.

The BKGreataxe is awesome. Surprisingly fast, and really strong and long. (I'm asking for a "that's what she said" with this sentence) The Strong attack may be kind of useless, but it's fun sending enemies flying.

It's a fun, challanging game, but as I'm one of the idiots who tries to play it with a mouse and keyboard, it can be a bit hard at times. It's still enjoyable, though.

I'm trying to hunt down the BKGA, but I'm not far enough in the game to roll with it (first play-through on PS3). Due to my experience with Demon's Souls and the Meat Cleaver (IIRC, the big, bloody sword), I prefer the heavy-tanky-big-weapony kind of guys, which, thankfully, Dark Souls makes a lot more viable. I started with the Zwei and went to Demon Great Machete, but that the DGM was way too damn slow. I currently am running with the Man-Serpent Greatsword at the recommendation of a friend who told me that it may fit my "Big Sword" criteria while not being completely slow, and it seems to be working really well. Well enough, in fact, that I'm not sure I should move onto another, bigger weapon since that will require me to readjust my equipment, stats, weight, etc., and the MSG is working pretty damn good even when I get summoned into NG+ games (I'm a bit over-leveled).

Would you say it's worth me moving onto the DKGA with my current set up?
Mind you, I'm barely mid-rolling as it is due to me having full Black Iron and the Silver Knight's Shield, as well.
Blightown entrance sucks. Who was the idiot who put the nearest flame so far away?

And is the chainmail viable for upgrade? Or is it a waste?

I'd wait until further in the game to upgrade armour, there's also something nice hidden in blighttown.

What kind of stats do you have anywyas?

Top of my head:

I'm early 30 SL

I know: 14 Int, 12 faith (due to wonders/magic) 2 attunement slots.

I think str, dex end all around 14 - 15. Vitality maybe 17.

The blighttown entry sucks. How far is the first bonfire?

SimonG: The blighttown entry sucks. How far is the first bonfire?
You need to reach the bottom, then it's very close no matter which way you entered. It's just a little cave type area off the swamp to the right or left depending which way you came down, beware of the AI spirit that invades when you get close to it however. It's easy but can catch you off guard.
no that's the second one the one in the swamp part, from what I remember the first one you can get to in the upper part is on like one floor down on a stony ledge
Blighttown is NOTHING compared to how the Valley of Defilement was in Demon's. It is bad, and in the consoles it has terrible slowdown, but dear lord, the Valley was ten times worse.
