There are plenty of good dark modules for Neverwinter Nights. Check out NWVault and search for:

"Prophet" by Baldecaran (complete series, Prologue, Chapter 1-3)
"Revenant" by McV (stand-alone)
"Vampire: Heaven Defied" by Chojin (stand-alone, initially planned as a series though, so open ended)
"Almraiven", "Shadewood" by Fester Pot (parts one and two of the Fateweaver trilogy, the third is in development)
"ee1 - elegia eternum" & "ee2 - excrucio eternum" by Stefan Gagne

to name just a few high rated ones, off the top of my head.

I recently found out that there is even some "adventure-exploration-horror"-mod made in crysis engine.
Well, I would like to add one.
Inquisitor.
Sold at GOG.

It pretty much is a depressing game. I like it.

TheCycoONE: The NWN fan module A Dance with Rogues is quite dark and adult themed. You're entire family is killed off the bat, and you're raped by someone you'll have to ally with. That was the darkest RPG I've played... much more so than Fallout.
Darkness in A Dance with Rogues was pretty forced to say the least, pun not intended. Well, maybe it was a little intended. Eeeh, anyway, it doesn't really present you with a very beleivable followup of situations, the main character would have died like ten times troughout the main storyline and keeps surviving by ... pretty much being lucky, really. And the only exceptionally dark thing about it is the shit your character is going trough, so... yeah.

Yeah, Worry of Newport. It's pretty great, the same bunch of people is now working on Triptych - essencially the same thing (genre-wise), but it seems to be way more polished.

I would recommend Dragon Age Origins it has a perfect blend between High fantasy and Dark.

Inquisitor is not jolly.

Well... depends on how much you love burning heretics. :P
I'd say the original Fallout has to be one of the darkest RPGs out there. Think about it: you're cast out from your comfortable womb of a world into a harsh reality that can kill you at any time, you start out with nothing but your Vault suit and a knife which in Fallout terms you might as well be naked...and you still haven't even left the cave.

Oh and you have a time limit. Good luck :D.

If you want a dark RPG, go with the original Fallout.

I have and played through all the Fallout games for years now. :)

Roman5: Nier

One of the best JRPG's I have ever played (which is hard for me to say since most of them are trash)

The game has a ton of very Emotional, dark and spectacular moments, despite being a good game on it's own

It's one of those games that's not just a game - it's an experience

Play it and see for yourself
I would, but Japan seems to hate the PC, so I can't!

Part 1
Part 2
Expect extreme sexual content. It was written by a woman and if you have ever red fanfiction created by females ... Yeah, it's that.

Thank you very much for taking the time +1
Another highly recommendable dark NWN module: Deja Vu.
I highy, HIGHLY recommend Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines. That game pretty much sums up everything you're looking for, at least that what you wrote in your post. It uses the old World of Darkness rpg system, which works good and is pretty rad!

(also, obligatory Planescape: Torment mention!
