Knights of the Old Republic 2 not only was dark, it was depressing if you ask me. Mediocre game though, I wouldn't really recommend it.

The Witcher's titles have a pretty grim vision of humanity too, but they are good games at least. And there's the first Deus Ex, wich has definitely a dark background but also enough humor to counterbalance it.

Sabin_Stargem: Alundra for the Playstation. An game similar to the Zelda series, it is fairly dark. Ditto with Illusion of Gaia and Terranigma for the SNES, in how they possess dark storylines and are action-RPGs.
Now that you say it, "Illusion of Gaia" has really sad moments. I always call it "sad", but "dark" fit it pretty well.

Dead of fond characters, slavery, starving people ...
This wasn't the typical themes addressed in SNES games.
I don't know how enix get away with it!

Dark RPG that speaks of only Grim Dawn

The absolute darkest (adult) game I know of that exist in this world is "I have no mouth, and I must scream" there is nothing and there will be nothing darker than this...

Beyond Grim Dawn, i would suggest NoX or deffantly Neverwinter Nights here on GoG.COM or Path of Exile

Aren't 90% of PC RPGs quite dark and adult themed? Diablo, Baldur's Gate, Planescape Torment, Fallout, Elder Scrolls games, Ultima Underworld, Ultima 7, Darklands... So just throw a dart on the pile of PC RPG boxes. :)

If you want something else, fire up some SNES RPGs.

Final Fantasy V and VI each have at least one scene that for the time was absolutely brutal. I teared up during VI. I think I might have issues.

The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind. Granted, nobody is perfectly human, but I think it fits. You have gods made mortal, corruptible and able to be killed. You have racism (Not based on skin color, as every race is totally unique aside from being bipeds). You have sickness, disease, madness, suggested genocides, guilds dedicated to theft and murder, assassination, enslavement, drug running, corrupt "police", written history of war and death and depravity (In game books), vampires and werewolves, and it's up to you to discover every bit of it for yourself.

Knights of the Old Republic II has some dark aspects.

If you can get ahold of a copy that doesn't crash every hour or so, consider yourself lucky.

Thank you all for your input.

The closer (RPG) to my question that I can think of is the Fallout series, including 3 and NV. Although I like them a lot, I find them very dark and depressing.

I am not going to reply each post here for obvious reasons.
JRPGs are not something I am interested in, I find them the single player equivalent of MMO grinding in a kiddie (to not use the word I am thinking) format. Which is a shame since I like one major part of them, turn based combat. But yeah, playing as very young anime characters is not my idea of fun. Although in a way it would be depressing lol.
Mind you, this is just my opinion.


I guess what I had in mind was something like the trailers of Dragon Age with the film Conan and other dark fantasy worlds where the most kind and nice person is one who kills by the hundreds. (BTW why isn't there a Conan RPG?)

I considered Darklands but I am not sure I will be able to tolerate the graphics any more. Don't get me wrong, I love old school games and I used to have computer games in the 80's, but something about the graphics on this one just doesn't cut it for me any more. I want of at least VGA level to consider it.

I thought of buying Ultima Underworld 1+2 here on GOG, you know, being thrown into a huge dungeon etc etc the story, it feels quite dark, and the environments are of course dark on their own, alas I guess I am out of credit LOL so that will have to wait.

Still, I want to thank you all very much for your input, very appreciated.
