PoSSeSSeDCoW: As far as I know, there's no Greek myth called God of War, and God of War is a quite a bit more applicable to the source material, as Greek myths tend to have violence and gore involving the main character, which Dante's Inferno definitely does not.

never said the was a greek myth called god of war but it is based off of peices of greek mythology, badly mangled pieces of greek mythology. Also if god of war is more aplicable because it is violent and so are greek myths then arguably dantes inferno is just as applicable because he goes to hell in the game and in the original book.

PoSSeSSeDCoW: The Dune game which, admittedly, I have not played, seems to be similar in tone and is supposed to be loosely based upon the story. However, if I had been older than three at the time, familiar with the books, had access to a location where I could be "butthurt" and people could hear me, and aware that the game was a bastardization of the novels, then I would complain about it as well.

Conisitency, its all I ask for :P
Edit for typo: I also ask for consistency

"we hope you’ll agree that it was all done in the spirit of the good natured fun of Comic-Con."
Yes, because going one step further into the gutter by portraying booth babes (er, sorry, "costumed reps") as actual whores rather than just sex objects is simple, harmless fun and not at all even more degrading to women in general than making the girls wear a minimum of clothing and put on sexy smiles and poses for lascivious nerds.
More importantly, where's the sjupport for gamers who prefer guys? Did they have manwhores (or if you prefer, "male costumed entertainment publicity liaison technicians") as an option?

That would have probably caused an even bigger uproar due to it possibly involving the media targeting it as a homosexual marketing and attraction plot.
Which would lead to more controversy and probably even religious protests that they didn't have to organise themselves.
See why I'm surprised here?

PoSSeSSeDCoW: I thought some people wouldn't get the analogy I was making, but I thought it was slightly better than using my second choice, a dating simulation based on Jane Austen novels.
JamesGecko summed it up nicely.
And, yes, you hit the nail on the head. It's not only that they're using the name of it, they're also implying that it's strongly based off of it, which simply isn't true. It's like saying a porno strongly based off of Casablanca and having the same name of it is not a perversion of the original. Yes, it may be valid on its own, but to steal the notoriety of the original work without staying true to it is, in my opinion, dishonest and, to a certain extent, despicable.

Mentalepsy: Yeah. I haven't really paid any attention to this game, so I don't really know how they're trying to paint it. There's nothing really wrong with twisting an older tale in a new direction, even twisting "high art" to "low art," but playing it off as faithful to the original when it's clearly not is a different matter.

I have to agree with this. As someone who read the first of the 3 verses, the inferno part of the divine comedy, and im not by any means an expert, I dont understand where from EA is slapping the work of Dante into this. Someone mentioned Ocean eleven, but this isnt some novel that came out in the usa in the last 3 decades, this is a timeless classic. It's like someone would try to make an action/driving game out of the Cid. In the verses, the main character who is not Dante himself at all, is only taking some sort of tour through the christian hell, with his companion Virgil, a historical figure. He doesnt go around fighting hoards of demons and executing these awesome finishing moves on his way to save his beloved princess. He only takes the tour, because he lost his way in life, not because he wants the woman he loves back. Everything about this game is completely made up. Its not the case of taking "creative licenses" or being a "loose adaptation", its just something completely unrelated and different. They should have just put Gears of the Gods' War as a title instead.

Not really. I notice this shit happens all the time so I just take a glance and move on. Besides, EA shouldn't have to apologize if the women did it voluntarily. Besides, it's marketing. What are ya gonna do?

So if they paid real hookers to shag the winners of the contest that's be okay because the hookers agreed?

Call them out for thier bullshit that sells to the lowest common denominator and actively retards the progress of changing the perception of gaming as a legitimate hobby and not something practised exclusively by 12 year old boys with hard ons?

It's EA. You should expect this by now. And if they did pay real hookers (Which those women could have been...) at least they got paid.
Guys, this is a promotion. As far as immoral, perhaps, but then who here has cable? What we consider borderline wouldve had someone had a heart attack 50 years ago. EA is no worse then HBO, or Spike when it comes to "immoral." This is actually much better then the man show, manswers, and other programming available to just about everyone. I guess that I just fail to see the huge issue with their ad campaign, given how the world is now. Personally i wouldnt have gone this direction with an ad but its their game so they can advertise any way they want.
I never said it was immoral, it just shows a gross lack of class and despite the similar or worse things on TV, shit liks this helps engender disrespect for gaming

Yeah! That should show them that gamers aren't violent!
