I've heard tell of such things, and I'm interested to know if they work better than the official stuff. Specifically, I'm trying out a Netgear WNR2000 (N300) v2, and I'd like to get the best out of it.

is supported on that router. Put WNR2000 into the text field in the [url=http://dd-wrt.com/site/support/router-database]Router Database.

Edit: DD-WRT is a fantastic firmware replacement. You will not want to go back to the original firmware.

So I just download the software and flash it to the router like I would normally flash the "official" software?

The Flashing documentation for this model links here.

It looks like you should be able to flash your firmware as normal with corresponding .chk file, but it's a good idea to search through the forums to make sure there isn't any kind of special case. You might want to find out if there is some kind of JTAG or TFTP mechanism for restoring your original firmware in case of a failure or mistake.

The guy who does that is a jerk off that tried to steal work from a bunch of folks, I think Open-WRT is the new actual OSS effort.

Open-WRT doesn't support my model WRN2000 v2. I'm going to upgrade later on to the WNDR4000, and they don't even have an entry for that.

Fair enough, if you have no choice then the conclusion is obvious. If you have the choice to avoid that project the OSS world thanks you, but you shouldn't suffer just because they can't support your router.
