Maybe you have heard about it, Canonical is trying to build a next-gen smartphone like Formula 1 builds next-gen cars.

For this to happen, they are doing a crowdfund that ends August 21.

On the portal, link: is.gd/UbuntuEdge , you'll find the needed information and the place to join.

You can fund any amount, and for just $ 695, you'll become the proud owner of the Ubuntu Edge!

Spread the word, that's what's needed to reach the goal amount. Thunderclap can be used: link: www.thunderclap.it/projects/3555
Sorry, I am rooting for Jolla Mobile, which is another Linux phone by ex-Nokia employees.

Albeit I believe it will always stay in oblivion while everyone buys Androids and iPhones. But I might still buy one just for a geeky gadget. After all, I don't seem to be buying/getting much of any apps for my Android phone either, besides just HiB Android games. So I guess it won't matter that much to me even if Jolla has very little apps.
Just $700?
I use more than that to light my cigars!

For a high-end phone, that isn't a lot at all. This isn't a device that's meant to be bought by the great majority (won't be available for purchase at all), but the top of the top for enthusiasts.

I saw it before, and doubted it will get funded. They've been playing with the prices since launch, but it's not enough. Maybe when they fail here they could launch on Kickstarter, where they might do better (even if they can't offer the enterprise package there).

I like the idea, just not enough to spend $725 (plus taxes) on it.

Unlike the ubuntu, this one looks interesting. Always loved Nokia's... best hardware out there for a longtime.

It's a shame that they seem to need so much, I don't follow online crowdfunding much beyond a kickstarter here and there but near ten million seems like a truely massive amount to raise with that method. I'm thinking that there's just some amounts that are so large that not even the internet can fund them.

Linux fanboys aren't stupid either. And this phone is a stupid idea in the first place. Dual booting android and Ubuntu? Wtf!? I don't want to dual boot my phone too, it's enough that I have to do that on my laptop. A more elegant solution would've been preferable. Like pure Ubuntu. Or Ubuntu and android apps running in a VM. Anything else... but not dual boot. Thus it's crap.

So why don't you just not dual boot and stay with Ubuntu? Android is just an option. The way I understand it, the usage case is for people who want to use Android on the road and Ubuntu when using the phone as a desktop, or who just want to own a very powerful Android phone. How is being offered an option inferior to not being offered it?

From what I understand it won't work as a phone with ubuntu. Maybe I wasn't really paying attention. Also then android would waste like half of that 32GB storage. Also you don't have enough apps for ubuntu (like gps apps) etc. So it would be nice if it could run android apps also (from the store) but in the same time be Ubuntu :).
As it is it seems to me that it's just a half-baked product. Thus not worth the 700 bucks. Actually you can buy a similar android phone for much less.

You weren't paying attention. Ubuntu is a first class citizen, and meant to use as a phone OS. That's pretty much the point of the phone, being able to seamlessly plug the phone in and transition from using Ubuntu as a phone OS to using it as a desktop OS.

Also, the phone specs include 128GB of storage. I have no idea where you got the 32GB figure from.

"Dual-boots into Ubuntu mobile OS and Android; converts into a full desktop PC" - this was the line where I've stopped reading. I was assuming 32GB because that's standard nowdays
Also Ubuntu is not as popular as it used to be. The Unity interfaced turned away lots of desktop users.

Yep. Me for example.

For me also the first step is to install cinnamon :). Or I just use mint... though that one has other issues :(

Me too. I still use Ubuntu, but my first move with a fresh installation is to install the default GNOME 3 interface. So much better (although I am a bit nostalgic for the classic GNOME 2 layout).

Tempted to give Cinnamon a try though.
