Given that one of my profs was good friends with him and confirmed some of the things Willamette Weekly wrote about, I'd say it was more cocaine than bad weed or coffee :P

No, but there's a bit of the whole "friend of a friend" thing going on around here. Especially if you're involved in a particular activity, the overall group also involved can sometimes seem really small.

The "prizewinning writer" tag usually translates into "pretentious twat" anyway so no surprise there ;).

Reading the description of his book on Amazon ... dear lord, it's laughable:
"playing titles such as Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, BioShock, and Oblivion for, literally, days"

So that's 2 very overrated games, one pretty bad one and then L4D which I bet he played on console as well. And for *gasp* days! Really, like every other gamer out there, then?

The fact that he believes we're in the golden age of gaming really says everything you need to know about his incompetence. The golden age of gaming was a loooong time ago before publishers ruined it for everyone by copying, killing originality, rushing unfinished games, charging tons for DLC, adding heaps of DRM, etc. etc.. Only through indie gaming and kickstarter, gaming may finally start to get a real proper new age again.

I had to check from my GPS navigator where "Portland" is exactly.

The first hit in the list was Portland, Jamaica. Sorry I'm a bit slow today, was that what the "weed" and "bad weather" references were there for? Yeah I know it sucks to explain jokes, but there you go.

Though I haven't been there in years (I live on the East Coast), I have some second cousins there I've visited a couple of times. And I really only remember the huge used bookstore (which I totally forget the name of) where I bought my Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy books.

Most likely Powell's books.

Also, if you are familiar with Portland, the TV show Portlandia has some really funny sketches. I suppose their pretty funny if you're not familiar with the area too.

He reviews the console version of The Witcher 2, after reading about the hype and the lack of any really negative review of the PC version. Is he being deliberately contrarian? I don't know.
Books was great, review was cause of hype and lack of playing longer than 6 hours.
