Daynov: Off the top of my head Clive Barker's Undying and Condemned: Criminal Origins, although I won't use "criminally" in both cases, just underrated.
Condemned is a good one, one of my favorite games of that era and hardly anyone talks about it.

zavlin: Iji is a freeware game, and its one of the coolest platformers iv ever played (freeware or not). Its kindv like what deus ex might be like as a platformer:

Iji... Yeah, I remember playing that one a long time ago. At the time, thought it was too boring and complex for a side scrolling plataform. Might give it another shot sometime.

Faces Of War, Men Of War, Men Of War Red Tide are really good WW2 games that do not seem very popular. They should be popular though. The games suck me in so much that I always get very emotional when seeing one of my tanks getting destroyed by enemy forces. Basically, these games are like the Company Of Heroes games(great games BTW) but more realistic. A squad of your men, can be gunned down in several seconds with an enemy machine gun.

If were talking underrated and overlooked and were also talking 1C then that would be Star Wolves A realyl fun and quality sim from 1C, kinda falls in the vein of A.I.M. and Hard Truck

on a side note A.I.M. is DRMfree and so is the sequel, hard Truck is as well... i have the entire 1C collection from GamersGate and i dont regret buying it for a moment! it was on sale for $20 last week amazing investment

Have you played Death to Spies yet? That is an awesome game.

For those not in the know this game features looking through keyholes before entering a room to see if any enemies are inside, disguising yourself as the enemy by knocking them out and then donning their uniform, hiding bodies, kidnapping important members of the German army. Also you play as a Russian spy which is rather unique for a WW2 game since 99% of WW2 games have you playing as the Americans.

The interface can be a little clunky at times but I thinnk that was due to the slightly crappy specs of the computer I was playing it on rather than the game's fault.

Fuzzyfireball: Powerslave
Just FYI, people outside the United States probably know this game better as 'Exhumed'.

Urban Chaos: Riot Response

One of those late era PS2 titles that got some good reviews and noone played because they all moved onto the XBox 360 by then. UCRR was developed by Rocksteady (of Batman: Arkham Asylum/City fame). It's an FPS with riot-shield based gameplay, and some light squad mechanics working with EMTs and firefighters. The gunplay is really satisfying and the kills are spectacularly gory, and the missions have some reason to go back with stacked objectives and goals. If I had to pick, I'd say it's an even better shooter than Black (another PS2 FPS, though one which garnered more acclaim than UCRR). If you have a PS2 you can score it used for a decent price.

Intelligent Qube for the Playstation, it is probably one of the best puzzle games ever with unique gameplay that still holds up today.
NetStorm: Islands At War was (as far as I know) the first MMO RTS, and came out in 1997. Each player would start with an island in the sky, and the goal was to build bridges to the enemy players' bases, capture their priests and sacrifice them. Sacrificing priests would earn experience to level up and unlock further buildings.

Even to this day, it's a pretty unique game, but sadly, it died a premature death. The full game was leaked before the release day and excessive piracy lead the publisher to pull the game's marketing, dooming it to obscurity.

The good news is that it's still around, and there's a small community of dedicated players who still release updates.

i recently bumped into a freeware title called "donna: avenger of blood." So far iv played the prologue and the first chapter....and... WOW.
This is essentially an old school point-and-click adventure of vampire the masquerade. You have blood points and powers that you use to solve puzzles. The puzzle design so far has been both challenging and logical... a rare combination. The music is very "twin peaks".. the story is dark and intriguing. There is quality and care all over this thing... i feel like i did when i played through the first chapter of GK1.. stunning. The game is very much R-rated and has no shortage of nudity, also the story is quite dark, so not for kids.
But if youre looking for a point-and-click gem...for free.. look no further:

EDIT: iv played through chapter 2 now (and parts of chapter 3).. this game is huge.. and it fully deserves a large cult following.
