I don't know about craziest, but for stupidest back in my undergrad chemistry days I quenched the residue from a THF still with water. For those who aren't chemists, THF stills are kept dry by a significant amount of sodium metal (reacts violently with water), and unknown to me the residue I was quenching still contained several good-sized chunks of unreacted sodium. So within seconds of me adding water the flask I was holding had several golf-ball sized chunks of flame in it, spewing out hydrogen gas and who knows what other fumes. We had to evacuate the lab for about 15 minutes until the fire had burned itself out and the vapors had cleared. Looking back I'm lucky that the entire flask didn't explode in my hands.
