stg83: You can try the following steps which I found online while searching for this particular error:

- You can expand a new copy of the EXE from your Windows install CD-Rom

- From a command prompt you can expand the file. An example;

- expand E:\I386\wowexec.ex_ %systemroot%\system32\wowexec.exe
would expand a new copy to the \system32 directory.

Also you'll want to use the correct version for the service pack level
you're at. So you may need to extract the file from a service pack.

Hope this is of some use to you. :)
Why thank you, I finally decided to use your suggestion a try and it worked, time for me to play some H.E.D.Z :D

I can now play other 16 bit games as well.

So that's 16bit games in 32bit windows or 64? :?

RevolutionSphere: Hi all, I recently found my old copy of H.E.D.Z which I was very happy to see and I thought I could get to playing it right away.
DANG! I also have this game lying around and wanted to play it again but I was so certain that it wouldn't work on Windows 7 that I didn't even bother trying.

Nice to see that you got it running. Will have to try it too in a while. It's probably worse than I recall (I wasn't that demanding back then) but still, I had a blast playing it. I never beat the whole thing but I got pretty far. I particularly remember some badass soldier lady with two SMGs. Good times.

No problem, I am glad it worked out for you. Happy gaming. :)

The OP is running it on Windows XP 32-bit not Windows 7. :)

RevolutionSphere: But then again, I shouldn't need to use a VM, considering that I'm using XP. I will use it as a last resort option.
Right, I didn't see that mentioned (looking back now, I do see it mentioned in post #10). I assumed you were running a 64-bit version of Windows 7 and had an old XP licence lying around. I wouldn't recommend using the same licence on the host machine and in the VM (unless it's a VLK, a licence intended for use on multiple machines).

Well it works for the most part, apart from this.

Its probably due to how old my copy is.

No I don't think its because of it being an old copy, unfortunately there will be some glitches as these 16-bit games weren't meant for Windows XP. Like some folks have suggested you will get the 16-bit games properly on Windows 98 running on a virtual machine. It you need any help with installing and setting up VMware Player then I would be happy to help you out with it. :)

EDIT: Here is a download link for VMWare Player and also to a guide for installing Windows 98 on VMware:

Though I do remember playing this game on older Windows XP fine. If your up for helping set it up VMware Player that would great, this game was one of childhood classics and I never did get a chance to complete but I did get close. I'm hoping that it would great Gog release.

Hmm...if you remember playing this game on Win XP before then it is odd that it is glitching now. Anyway I have edited my previous post with some links to download VMWare Player and then install Windows 98 on it. You can try using that and if you have any questions after that then I will try my best to help out. :)

But I wouldn't I need a Win 98 disc to mount on to VMplayer?

No you don't need a disc, you can also use an ISO file to mount it and then install using that on VMware Player but you would still need a product key to install it. Here is a video link as well that shows how to install WIn 98 on VMWare player. But, if you don't have a windows 98 CD or a product key though then I would still advise you to check the games forum for H.E.D.Z to fix the issues regarding the glitches while running it on Win XP.

Sadly I don't have a Win 98 disc or product key, I'll have to find a fix for it.
There's also not much information to do with the game, as it wasn't too popular when it came out
or fixes for XP.

That is unfortunate, I actually tried searching online as well but didn't find anything helpful either about running it on XP. Sorry, I couldn't help you out any further on this. :(
