GameRager: It's cuz ET should stay DEAD & BURIED out in the desert where it belongs. :p
Roberttitus: You actually played it? I doubt it... the hate on the game has taken on a life of itself (I.E. Most people just say it sucks because they have heard it sucks, not because they have actually played it themselves to confirm this). There are plenty of games that are way worse than it could ever hope to be (especially when you take into consideration technological advancements).
I did play it on the original 2600 (I'm 42, so I was about 12 or so when the game first came out). I can say from first hand experience that it was not a particularly good game, even by the standards of the system. For example, Activision was pumping out some good games for the 2600 at that point (Pitfall, River Raid, etc.).
While not the worst game ever, today it still has to rank as one of the most overhyped prior to release. And I think this was a major contributor to the backlash that occurred after its release. Everyone was expecting a phenomenal game because of the franchise, and what was delivered was a simplistic, mediocre game (again, even measured by the standards of the day) that pissed off fans of the console and the movie.
Edit: To the subject of the OP, Outlaw may have been a fairly simple game, but it was enormous fun when playing against someone else.
