I need help with my computer. It's working slower and it's only gotten one virus. That was when it was new. But It recovered and worked fine. So, I'm not ready to chuck it out. HELP ME speed this thing up!

You did manage to get rid of the virus, right?

Have you tried CCleaner? It might help and it's free.

I did get the virus off. Also I've tried CCleaner.
I'd like to say this computer is a Windows PC. Macs get viruses too.

One thing slows computers down: software.

Take all the software off and it'll run fast again.

Honestly, truly - I mean that.

See all those handy little programs you installed and left to run in the background and on startup - they are slowing it down. All those little chat programs, toys, widgets and whatnot - just clutter that slows things down.

Try this test: restart your machine, log in and let it load everything - but don't start any programs manually. Now, how many icons do you have in the System Tray?

If its more that 6 (and that's being generous) it is probably too many.

Yeah, Mac users are just starting to realise that themselves. :P So much for security in obscurity. It doesn't work when your computer is made by the most profitable company there is.

Have you tried using a defrag tool? I recommend MyDefrag. Not recommended for use on SSDs, only regular hard drives.

As a last ditch resort I'd say just format it, reinstall Windows and start over. It doesn't take that long as long as you back up everything (including installers of your favourite applications and drivers) somewhere else first).

P.S. It would help if you told us in what manner it is slow:
- starting up
- starting applications and games
- running applications
- browsing the web
etc.

Yeaaaah....I don't have six icons. So I need to arrange them into folders so the PC can load in faster by loading less icons. Also,I probably have to persuay my bros to delete useless programs and RAM.

I can honestly vouch for this. I had to reformat my kids' computer 'cause it was running so slow and not doing right, after that it was up to par even for it being about 3 yrs old and has Vista. They had so many games and programs on there.

I've also used a program called "End it all" . There are 2 versions and should be freeware on the net. It closes all the programs that aren't needed down and you can also lock certain ones so it doesn't close them.

I also agree with defragging too, before even doing a reformat to the HD.

Starting up-Bad to Mediocore to Good to Fast
Starting applications and Games-Light games:Fast Start; Heavy games: Mediocore to slow start
Running applications:Random
Browsing the web:Good
Stability:Random and sometimes unstable;Crashing and spazzy

Hang on - I don't know if you have understood what I was meaning.
Don't go deleting things and moving things just yet until we know what we are talking about.

I am talking about the System Tray - which shows icons for running programs - I am not taling about the Desktop or the Start Menu.

I have Used the defrag.I probably should just delete all programs (not including the preinstalled ones) and start over. This might of happened 'cause of Vista :P

If you don't have a lot of free space then that would certainly explain it. I'd also recommend taking a look at your virtual memory settings and see if you can't increase that a bit.

No. the Computer CAME with Vista.

About 2GB of RAM (half) is being used.
