I have two nieces, ages 6 and 8, and I've been trying to introduce them to some of the computer games I own. Most of the stuff I play is still a bit beyond them, however. Seeing as how I haven't tried every game out there, and I'm not even remotely an 8 year-old girl, I thought I might ask the community for suggestions.

Basically, I buy stuff from GOG.com and Steam, so anything from those two venues is a possibility.

At the moment, the girls seem to like

- Toki Tori
- DC Universe online (the newbie area)
- Global Agenda (the newbie area)
- Spore (mostly the Initial phase)
- Magic the Gathering (for the 8 year-old)

- Mario Karts (on the Wii)
- Just Dance (also on the Wii)
- Super Mario Bro's (on the Wii)
- Wii Sports (all kinds)

They also play a lot of Friv games. I'm guessing they would probably enjoy driving around in Midtown Madness, but I haven't tried that, yet.

When I was 8 I played Wolfenstein-3D and sorta turned out okay.

Maybe graphic adventures? The King's Quest series by Sierra are pretty kid friendly - I was playing them around the same age.

hm.. a bit out of the original scope, but Minecraft? a lot of kids like the free-form of play in creative mode (it is digital Lego...) and survival mode is a l little bit scary enough without being 'bad', and very can be very engaging. (just make sure you control it if they want to go on online servers)

I think I was 8-9 when i used to play seven kingdoms. its a good game and might still be free on desura a friend of mine uses minecraft in primary school lessons he teaches. (personally I think he just wants to skive)

Commander Keen was a childhood favourite. As was Duke Nukem 3D. But I recommend the former.

For some reason I can't think of anything else in particular right now.

If you have consoles I can recommend Zelda as well, WW might be your best bet. Minish Cap is also awesome and of moderate difficulty.

The game that's affected me the most is Ocarina of Time, it is almost solely responsible for any skill I have in english today, for instance.

The Commander Keen games are excellent. From games on GOG, the Rayman games are good.

I'm Just enjoying the "Neighbours from Hell" and I deem them Kids friendly. The interface is easy enough and its funny and nice to look at, too.

Yeah start with either King's Quest VI or V.
