You might have heard that the guys at Stainless Games have been trying to Carmageddon + the Splat Pack if you back the Kickstarter project for $25 or more!

In case you aren’t aware of what Carmageddon is, let’s take you a brief tour of gaming history. It’s the late nineties, and Stainless Software Ltd. brings a game that bursts onto the scene in a spray of blood, a crash of steel, and a anguished shriek of pedestrians when they released Carmageddon. It’s an ultra-violent racing game--this is not one for the kiddies!--where you crash, rend, crush, crumple, and demolish your way to victory. There’s a backstory of sorts--the world has gone to pot, and you’re racing in order to survive in a car-eat-car world--but that’s not the point.

Your job is to win races. Sure, you could play the game like a realistic racing simulator, avoiding any fender-benders and pedestrians. You can even win all of the races that way if you’re talented. But the real fun comes from pulling wild stunts, wrecking and collecting your opponents’ cars, and generally wreaking havoc on the track. Carmageddon launched amidst a lot of controversy due to its violent nature, but under the gore and impressive 3dFX graphics lies a great game.

This will be coming to GOG.com in the upcoming months--our crack team of contentologists is hard at work getting all of the bytes dusted off and all of the graphics buffed to a high shine--and will be available here for $9.99. In the meantime, though, if you want to help make the next Carmageddon game happen, you can back it on Kickstarter, and if you chip in more than $25, you’ll get the GOG.com copy of Carmageddon for free once we’ve gotten it launched!

Gentlemen, start your engines!

Remmke: Sadly can't back Carmageddon since Amazon only accepts CC. :(
When they reach their goal, they may set up Paypal account for this.

tejozaszaszas: I would be surprised if Stainsless doesn´t have the original code.
avatar
DCT: I would be surprised if they did after all these years.

Still this is great news, well except for the "No steam, no sale" crowd. I been looking forward to this coming here for sometime, now hopefully this means we will also see Carmageddon 2 down the line as well.
That "no steam no sale" sect really piss me off. They don´t realize that Steam doesn´t support the games they sale (only the service itself), the original publisher does it, so the GOG option is the best one for Stainless, they don´t have to spend time and money testing the game. GOG makes it... For free.

jimbob0i0: You asked for an option to pledge to kickstarter without a credit or debit card and I gave you one....
i asked for nothing...

avatar
jimbob0i0: PayPal is not in place due to kickstarter policies:
so? what's stopping them from openeing a second financing channel?

avatar
jimbob0i0: There will be a PayPal option when the kickstarter itself is over (might be added as soon as 400k reached... but definitely after it's over).
well, OK. but there will also be a PayPal option was the game is finished and released, so i might as well just wait until then.

avatar
jimbob0i0: However if the goal is not reached they get no money at all... so that's why PayPal is not there right now.
as far as i can tell you can make pledges with PayPal, too. same as with a credit card. some online stores work this way: they 'charge' your PP account for your order, but will only actually take the money once the product is available and about to be shipped. if you cancel the order before that, or the product doesn't become available again, the charge is withdrawn and no money leaves your account. why would that not work for Kickstarter pledges?

anyway, i'm not desperate to part with my cash. it should be other way round, you know.

avatar
hedwards: Ah, so you're part of the problem. PayPal is more or less completely evil. I've had to cut through a tremendous amount of red tape over the last month to get payments to go through because they don't like that I'm trying to buy things while abroad and refuse to have any way of acknowledging that the payment was supposed to go through when you get the restrictions removed.
fuck this. i've been using PayPal ever since i've started making electronic purchases. never had a single problem. not once. most reliable service ever, IMO.

avatar
hedwards: I respect them a great deal for refusing to do business with PayPal, I personally only do business with them when absolutely necessary because they have a well deserved reputation for being dicks when it comes to the vendors.
well that's just great. so everyone should do things your way? what about choice, offering different options? you wouldn't have to use PayPal, you know, but it should be available for those of us who want it.

While they may not support a game after it's released, they do provide a whole framework to build games on for free to developers (Steamworks). It's a big part of the reason Stardock Games has now gone with Steamworks for Sins of a Solar Empire.

They may not support the game in the same way, but they are doing things for developers (that help themselves as well obviously, same with GOG)

But yeah, in the context of putting out a classic game, GOG is obviously best suited :)

Strijkbout: I backed them with a prepaid credit card, I used this one, it is accepted by Amazon (Visa).
Select the voucher option.

The project still needs more than $50k, is that possible in 12 days?
Well, they raised 350k in 18 days. So it should be doable. Do your part and spread the word. ;)

I understand them, as I'm in "no GOG no sale" sect.
Yesss, I've been waiting for this, along with Duke Nukem 3D, Blood, and Dungeon Keeper 1 and 2, I really have every game I could possibly have been asking for on here :D

Excellent news..!
Definitely worth it going for the $25 pledge over at the Carmageddon: Reincarnation kickstarter page though, since you'd get the new game along with the two old ones, that's insanely cheap..!

No, no. Only the first one and its expansion, you don´t get the second one.

And usually the highest peak in pledging comes within the final week / last few days in these Kickstarter projects...at least that's what I have noticed when observing the ones I'm interested in.
As for the kickstarter... Its a Steamworks game with a DRM version to come out "later". Anyone following know more about this? Does later mean, a few days after release? A few months? If they get around to it? I'm inclined to wait until the DRM version is actually out before putting any money towards it if the official release is Steamworks.

Prepaid debits work just fine. But that may not be ideal for you either. Posting just in case. I've use debit cards for 3 different kickstarters now. (the ones that Target sells in the US certainly work).

From what they've said sounds like DRM-Free version will be in the 'few months' range after the Steam PC version... will be before they start work on any Mac/Linux/Console versions though .....

If you pledge though you will get the game in both forms - you don't have to pick and choose.

Also the released versions will definitely be more than than $15 minimum pledge for the games ... and more than the $25 for the GOG reward too ;)
A piece of great news, yet I hope it won't be another DOSBOX port as Carmageddon can be very resource-consuming. I'd rather see something utilising a thing similar to this: http://www.carmageddon.com/forum/topic/337

I didn't see this mentioned anywhere so...

Will the new version of Carmageddon make its way to GOG as well?

If it is, if I contribute to the Kickstarter, can I redeem my copy of the game on GOG?
