You might have heard that the guys at Stainless Games have been trying to Carmageddon + the Splat Pack if you back the Kickstarter project for $25 or more!

In case you aren’t aware of what Carmageddon is, let’s take you a brief tour of gaming history. It’s the late nineties, and Stainless Software Ltd. brings a game that bursts onto the scene in a spray of blood, a crash of steel, and a anguished shriek of pedestrians when they released Carmageddon. It’s an ultra-violent racing game--this is not one for the kiddies!--where you crash, rend, crush, crumple, and demolish your way to victory. There’s a backstory of sorts--the world has gone to pot, and you’re racing in order to survive in a car-eat-car world--but that’s not the point.

Your job is to win races. Sure, you could play the game like a realistic racing simulator, avoiding any fender-benders and pedestrians. You can even win all of the races that way if you’re talented. But the real fun comes from pulling wild stunts, wrecking and collecting your opponents’ cars, and generally wreaking havoc on the track. Carmageddon launched amidst a lot of controversy due to its violent nature, but under the gore and impressive 3dFX graphics lies a great game.

This will be coming to GOG.com in the upcoming months--our crack team of contentologists is hard at work getting all of the bytes dusted off and all of the graphics buffed to a high shine--and will be available here for $9.99. In the meantime, though, if you want to help make the next Carmageddon game happen, you can back it on Kickstarter, and if you chip in more than $25, you’ll get the GOG.com copy of Carmageddon for free once we’ve gotten it launched!

Gentlemen, start your engines!
3Dfx support, huh? Looks we're at last seeing the first fruits of the partnership between GOG and Zeus Software. I'm guessing this means that they'll be using a custom build of DOSBox with built-in Glide support.

Hopefully the Linux and Mac folks out there can still run this using vanilla DOSBox.

I could definitely be wrong, but I think in part they're waiting for the downloader to offer update notifications before they add the technology to existing games.

But, OTOH, you don't really need to wait for them to do it. You can install nGlide yourself, I did so with Unreal and it looks absolutely gorgeous. even on my relatively slow laptop.
now this is what i want to see on GOG!

i just hope that 3Dfx-support is properly implemented. it should be no problem if you're using nGlide emulation.

really looking forward to this release.

jamyskis: Well, according to Stainless, the original release date is/was September. My own experience is that software can be tested and packaged in a month. If this info leak has brought about a need to shift the release date forward for PR reasons, then fair enough.

And hey, I'm not criticising. Controlling the flow of releases so that you can keep growth steady is a prudent business decision from a marketing perspective and I'd be very worried if you didn't do it.

TheEnigmaticT: Oh, yeah. I mentioned this a few hours ago in the other thread about this: we posted the date as September to give us a very long window in case we find a pernicious bug in the game that stumps us for a fix.

I believe we average somewhere between three and six weeks for a game to test and fix, but it can take a heck of a lot longer. Lack of source code can complicate issues. ;)
I would be surprised if Stainsless doesn´t have the original code.
Ok, I just made my pledge, phew.
Though I already have 3 copies of the game, they were all zombie versions. =D
I just pledged $160 and asked for the $150 reward... Nice, huh? :p
Sadly can't back Carmageddon since Amazon only accepts CC. :(
If you missed the thread so far lots of information about the kickstarter here:

Also there will be a Reddit AMA today at 5PM UTC with the Stainless devs.

If I understand things correctly, the only PC version of Carmageddon released was on DOS, and to use 3Dfx rendering on DOSBox, you need to use a custom build of DOSBox with "experimental" Glide support (unless those patches have already been rolled into the source trunk). I don't think there's a solution yet for Boxer.

I have Unreal with the 227h patch from OldUnreal running with OpenGL and it looks fantastic; have you tried the hi-res textures?

Edit: According to the game's DOSBox entry the game works fine on OS X using DOSBox with Dapplegrey. And what do you know? Someone's ported guilkoza's Glide support patches over to OS X. :)

I backed them with a prepaid credit card, I used this one, it is accepted by Amazon (Visa).
Select the voucher option.

The project still needs more than $50k, is that possible in 12 days?
sorry, but this is ridiculous. i'm not going to jump through hoops to part with my money. either set up a PayPal account for those of us who cannot or do not want to pay by credit card, or make do without my contribution.

i'll just buy Carmageddon on GOG when it's released, and i may (or may not) purchase the Kickstarter game when it's done and released.

I would be surprised if they did after all these years.

Still this is great news, well except for the "No steam, no sale" crowd. I been looking forward to this coming here for sometime, now hopefully this means we will also see Carmageddon 2 down the line as well.

$50k in 12 days is easy (especially with the new gog.com update)....

It's the $250k more to guarantee Mac and Linux versions I'm holding out hope for (though I expect that will include the paypal donation option after the kickstarter closes which will hopefully provide a decent boost).

You asked for an option to pledge to kickstarter without a credit or debit card and I gave you one....

PayPal is not in place due to kickstarter policies:
http://www.kickstarter.com/help/faq/backers#WhyCantIUsePaypWhyCantKickJustTakeMyCredCardInfo
http://www.kickstarter.com/blog/amazon-payments-and-us-only

There will be a PayPal option when the kickstarter itself is over (might be added as soon as 400k reached... but definitely after it's over).

However if the goal is not reached they get no money at all... so that's why PayPal is not there right now.

No Steam, No Sale was sorted - they announced a DRM-Free no steam version for single player and LAN multiplayer only in update eight ;)

Ah, so you're part of the problem. PayPal is more or less completely evil. I've had to cut through a tremendous amount of red tape over the last month to get payments to go through because they don't like that I'm trying to buy things while abroad and refuse to have any way of acknowledging that the payment was supposed to go through when you get the restrictions removed.

I respect them a great deal for refusing to do business with PayPal, I personally only do business with them when absolutely necessary because they have a well deserved reputation for being dicks when it comes to the vendors.
