Recently, me and a flat mate have been playing a lot of dungeon siege cooperatively. We've been having a wail of a time, but we're getting pretty close to completion and looking for something else.
So, does anybody have a suggestion for a good RPG (preferably action based), along the lines of dungeon siege? So far we've tried dungeon siege 2 and space siege, but weren't impressed. Diablo 2 was great in it's day, but I'd prefer something with a little better graphics.
Sacred Gold is released on GOG on Tuesday, which looks rather tempting, but I've no idea whether there's co-op play.
So, fellow GOG goers, what would you recommend?
Sam
Hey, I also played Dungeon Siege in LAN someday it was damn fun :D That was a good choice mate. I could recommend youBaldur's Gate Dark Alliance if you have a PS2. I played it at my cousin's place with him in co-op and it was pretty cool too, really action based too.
... Diablo 2? :D
That's all I can do for you, I don't really play RPGs which can be co-op'd, but if Titan Quest has a co-op mode I'd recommend it for you (even if I haven't tried it, I've heard it is a great game!).

There really aren't a lot of modern rpg's with coop that I would recommend. The nearest one I can think of coming Tuesday in the US is Sacred 2, which should be fun.
Next year or the year following Diablo 3 will be upon us, but that's a ways off. Other than that, there's slim pickings unless you go with some older games. Sacred Gold would be a good choice, but I'm not sure how GOG will handle the MP aspect of it, since in the original you needed a cd key to play MP.
You could always play NWN 2 on a persistent world with your friend if you want to try that, though there aren't many PW's for NWN 2. It's an option though, and I think if nothing else you can play the campaign with your friend either on a public server or you should be able to host a game.
Just some thoughts, I'll look into more games that have coop.

Hasn't Freelancer a co-op mode? :o
Sacred surprised me in GOG's line-up since its a much more recent title than many of its other releases - heck its hardly 4 years old and still availble in shops round here (UK). Infact I think its MP servers are still active so it might be that the sacred from GOG will ship with a single control key as well to allow MP through the original servers.
OR
The GOG Sacred will be separate and thus you would be able to play on the "official" servers - ergo no CD key - this would let the game be freer to play though then you would have to look for private servers or play in LAN which might be quite limited for many online aspects.

I remember playing Baldur's gate back in the day, it was really fun. I seem to remember the water effects being brilliant for the PS2. I may have do dig it out of the loft.
Titan Quest is something I should also look into; I've heard mixed opinions about it, but it does look rather interesting.

I really cannot wait for Diablo 3, it does look totally awesome. I do have NWN 2 installed at the minute, and we're debating trying that next.
You should try Darkstone

I've been playing it with a friend, it's kinda fun in the way Diablo 2 was, minus the "story" part.
I think action RPG's are played only to get the cool gear and kill, like, 2 bajillion bugs with it. So in that aspect, Titan quest is fun to play with a buddy. Plus you can select 2 "classes" that make some interesting character combinations.
it's like Dungeon Siege, with better looking graphics, minus the mule :D
Titan Quest`s Co-Op mode is a lot of fun.

Hmm, I'm seriously considering Titan Quest now, if the only real issues with it are lack of story. Story is great, but it's hardly essential for co-op. Besides, there's no Mule in multiplayer dungeon siege anyway. The 2 class thing sounds pretty interesting also. I'll see if I can find it suitably cheap somewhere.
You can buy Titan Quest Gold from Steam for only $19.99.

Titan Quest does have a story, and even a fairly decent one. The problem is that much like Diablo 2 or Dungeon Siege, you're briefly told what to do, then you spend the next two hours slogging through monsters to get to the next point. Narrative is rather hard to maintain under those circumstances.
However, it has an excellent character customisation scheme. You can choose any two power sets, so you can be a swordsman with elemental powers, a necromancer who summons nature based pets, an archer with defensive and protective powers, and any other combination you fancy. Add in friends with yet more combinations, and you've got a staggering array of abilities on call.
It's a really under-rated game, in my opinion. It may not be revolutionary, but it's a solid evolution of the Diablo play style. If it had a diffferent plot and been called Diablo 3, I'm sure that people would have heralded it as the greatest RPG ever. As it is, I have a sneaking suspicion it's going to be more revolutionary than Diablo 3, but we'll see how Blizzard does.
Oh, as a complete diversion, I know if t doesn't match what you're describing, but System Shock 2 has a co-op mode, and it is truly awesome. :)

Yeah Titan's Quest is a great game and under-rated for sure. Sacred 2 is out in a week or two, I hope it's good. They are also releasing a rpg called Jason and The Argonauts and another called Dungeon Hero (I think.)
By the way it would be great if this site could add that Dungeon Siege 2 expansion (if they add the DS2 game.)

So I ended up buying Titan Quest in the end. I started up the single player just to see what it was like, and ended up spending hours playing it. Put simply, I love it. It feels so much like Diablo 2, yet the graphics are superb and the Greek mythology setting makes for a very welcome change from the normal fantasy setting. I quite like the interface also.
Only two more towns to go to in Dungeon Siege, and then we'll probably head straight to this. How could I have overlooked this game for so long?!
Thanks for the suggestions everybody

It's quite an easy game to overlook, it was developed by Iron Lore, which was and in some cases still is a noname company. I enjoyed it quite a bit and spent hundreds of hours with the game before Immortal Throne was released.
I never did get the expansion for it, but might pick up the Gold edition soon, we'll see.
It's just a shame that Iron Lore went out of business.
