I know this isn't a GOG game, but I figured this'd be a good place to ask for help. I just picked up 3 games at the local Goodwill: Descent II, MechCommander, and Call To Power. I got Descent II and MechCommander working fine, but I'm having a bit of trouble with CTP (which is kind of funny, because it's the only one of the three that had an installer that actually worked for me). Basically, I can run the game, but the opening movie doesn't play and the screen doesn't refresh unless I move the mouse over the whole thing (which seems like a fairly common problem with old games, not sure why). I've already tried running it in Win98 compatibility mode, and when I tried to install the most recent patch it said I didn't need to, so any other suggestions would be appreciated. :)

Nope. Tried installing the patch from CNet, but it when I run it it says it doesn't need to be installed.

Try the 1.2 update and 1.21 hack from Apolyton.

If the videos still don't work, you need to install Indeo video codec which you can download here.

Also check the Apolyton website, as Civfanatics is generally for Sid's Civ games.

Hi everybody

This is my first post in this forum, maybe last so excuse me if I'm doing something wrong.

i had the same problem with playing for Call to power in my laptop with Windows 7 64 bit, I spend all day to find finally solution but I found . This is not so easy and required some patience and focus.

That what I did :
1. Download and install virtual box oracle (free virtual machine)
2. Create virtual machine for XP 32 bit.
3. Install Windows XP 32 bit en SP2
4. Install guest additions for this installed machine
5. Add shared folder with included patch 1.2 for "Call of Power" , "Direct X" and "Indeo video codec 5"
6. In virtual XP go to My Computer then My network places then Add network Places then "Next" and choose "Another network places" then navigate to shared folder described in point 5 .
6. Install in virtual XP Direct X and Indeo video codec 5
7. Mount in host virtual cd "Call of Power"
8. Setup in virtual XP device from host included "Call of power"
9. Install game in virtual XP
10. Install patch 1.2
11. In virtual XP press right CTR and Home and choose Machine->Disable Mouse Integration.

Now game ready to play in virtual XP

When I've had the problem with other games, two things often work (not 100% though):

1: I lower dektop res from 1366x768 to 1360x768
2: With that window open, I click advanced and then the majority of these woes vanish as the games runs fine most of the time.

But in case described in first post problem lay in Indeo video codec which is supporting only for old windows so it is not possible to install Indeo video codec in Windows 7.

If you are going to virtualise XP for this VMWare player is probably a much better option. It has much better 3D accelation support, in built support for 'XP Mode' (a free XP licence if you have Windows 7/8 Professional) and much better 'just works' integration so the list cuts out about 6 steps from your list. Note that you need a valid XP licence to legally do this.

CtP runs fine. I assume the indeo 5 codec is the only thing that is missing. Just look for it, download and install it, and the videos will run properly.

No need to use a virtual machine or download anything, the drivers are already available in Win7 you just need to register them...

open a command prompt
cd C:\Windows\SysWOW64 (Win7 64 bit only)
regsvr32 ir50_32.dll
