There are people who had their face amputated just to save their lives, but that's the point: to save their lives. If a body part cannot be salvaged then amputation is the the only course. The controversy (that shouldn't even be one) is about amputating healthy body parts for no benefits. Also, no one gives a f' about what you do with your body, it's about parents doing it to their children.

What Phish said. Perhaps I was unclear in not stating that my objection is to parents doing it to infants as SOP. Here in the US, all male infants are regularly circumcised soon after birth. I have no problem with infants having their genitals operated on, or any other kind of surgery, if there are valid medical reasons. I also have no problem with adults getting it done, when they are old enough to make their own decisions about their bodies.

nah, I should have guessed that was what you meant. It is certainly not a common practice around here to get children circumcised like that, so your point didn't click. We can agree in that circumcision itself should not be illegal, but forcing it upong a minor should. Or at least, very much restricted when compared to what you describe.

It's the fact that there's no benefit while there being potential for real damage, yet the religious here fight stridently to maintain it. Pisses me off. I've met men with problems because of botched circumcisions.

This reminds me of how excited I was when I got my first pubic hair. That was until I peed out of it. :-(
