hedwards: It used to be. My teacher from last term had just gotten back from China and they're experiencing significant inflation.

As for the notion of the Chinese people living under higher quality conditions in the US, that's not factually correct. Air quality in the big cities is a serious health hazard and the food isn't necessarily safe to eat. Think recycled rolls. And the water quality is in a dubious condition. That's for folks living in the major cities.

God help you if you're unfortunate enough to live in more rural areas. The air is probably cleaner but most of the other problems are still there.

Not that I have a particular hatred of China, but a bit of honesty is in order.
I think you misread. He specifically said living conditions are better in the USA.

What would you do to change the fact? Instead of sitting and saying "oh dear... yeah... it's bad... it's wrong... they shouldn't do it..."

In U.S. Bradley Manning is kept in humiliating conditions, he sleeps naked without any bed, they are searching him every 3-4 hours, etc etc.

Look for regime all around you, not only in China.

I couldn't agree more. As a veteran, and one who didn't simply view the Army as a meal ticket for going to college, his actions, if true, seriously disgust me.

Essentially yes, I got it out of order. But yes, he did say USA is better in terms of general living conditions. The only way I could imagine somebody thinking otherwise would be an incredibly sheltered visit or outright lying about it.

Manning had it coming. He was not a whistleblower. There are appropriate channels to accomplish what Manning tried to do (another Vet here) but he committed treason. I hate big government and police states but there is a consequence for putting so many lives at risk.

This is pretty fucked up. It's just sad that all the other human rights abuses in China make this seem like another tree in the forest of man's inhumanity to man though.

Also the fact that people might feel guilty about this when... well, where do you think our clothes come from? Santa's little elves?

Yeah, but that doesn't mean they should be used as cheap labor. History already taught us that such a process can be lucrative but is wrong as hell (Nazi camps, Syberian gulags, etc).

Well - that WAS how a gulag worked. You even could've earned a bit more food if you've managed to fulfill (IIRC) more than 200% of the quota... Thing is - the quota was based on the average amount getting done.

Makes me wonder what Americans have as compulsory reading in high school...

Yeah. As long as they are only beaten a little blue I think it is okay, but they should not be beaten yellow or black. A little water boarding have never hurt anyone either.

LOL! Repeating bullshit after tv that releasing U.S. marines WAR CRIMES puts someone's lives at risk is funny. God damn funny.

And when same happens on Chinese side of the world - it's OPRESSION and REGIME.

Prisoners have worked for prisons the world over for years...why is that so wrong? And by bit I meant blurb, not that any beating is ok.

They should. Because nowadays, the only people who sleep and eat for free are prisoners. People that KILLED, ROBBED, RAPED AND MOLESTED CHILDREN, LIVE FOR FREE when everybody else has to PAY FOR LIVING.

Not really. Depends on how you choose to live. They have no choice.

The simple act of living is itself free in most civilized nations. I don't pay a life tax. I do pay rent on a house, but I'm free to live on the street if I like. I'm sure many a prisoner would glady choose to live on the street instead of prison.
