In this case, I'd say it's quite rational, actually. Aiming to be number 2 in digital distribution? That does not involve just cosmetic changes.

Haha. Yeah, I'm not really that gungho, it was more of a satirical response to everyone's overly pessimistic responses. GOG hasn't screwed us yet, so I'll retain some hope that they won't lose their way in this matter either.

One more thing. As you all remember , GOG.com made a survey some time ago (with prizes, i hope they will annouce winners soon) asking , among other things, if people wanted new games on gog.

And I think it turned out yes, and this is the reason they stepped forward.

It is not as simple as you might think. GOG only has a limited amount of ressources available. And I want GOG to put those into getting the classics back.Let's just take one aspect of the whole GOG going to new frontiers business. The licencing.

A good corporate lawyer costs arung 400 € - 500 € an hour. So you want to minimize the involvement of lawyers. I want GOG to invest this money into getting e.g. LucasArts or maybe finally untangling the whole System Shock mess. If they start getting publishers on board to publish games like "Hydrophobia" some of that legal budget gets diverted to the developer/publisher of that game, which will cause a delay on other "old games".

New games isn't just something "free on top" for GOG. It is a whole new venue that will drain ressoruces away from their core market. Therefore this is something to be very concerned about. It's not that I don't trust GOG, but a lot of good companies have made terrible "marketing decisions" in the past (e.g. LucasArts abandoning adventures in favor for medicore Star Wars games). And in the end, GOG still is a company that must make profits.

And I think their "core model" can still do better. Bundles e.g. or Text Adventures of the 80's for maybe 2.99$.

While I'm not that worried and I'd even prefer to get a bit newer $20 games here (like in DotEmu), I think it is still a valid point that if the focus becomes releasing newer (higher priced) games that work on modern systems without any remastering needed from GoG, then probably less and less resources and time will be used on releasing older $5-10 games that may be a bitch to get to work on modern systems. The old games are more work to release, and still probably less profitable.

Anyway, since they stated they are going to stay DRM-free even with new games, I don't think we need to worry about that that much because the selection of really new titles will be probably quite limited, at least outside indie titles.

I hope they'll still add real Good Old Games to their catalogue. I've only got a bad feeling about adding newer games to the catalogue, because they may turn their focus only on newer games. Especially, if they want to be a major competitor to Steam, they'll have to focus on newer games. Maybe CD Project sees that there's much higher profit from the newer titles, so they're going to make newer games as their main profile. However, I hope GOG will still be adding many great, older games to their catalogue, because there are games you can't buy anywhere else. I really like the idea that every game costs maximally 10 dollars, or if it's cheaper, it costs 6 dollars. It would be a bit bad that if there's going to be a new price tag.
Also, I don't have any irrational fear of change, but if I'd like to buy newer games, I look at other sites. If I want to buy an older game, I go to GOG.com. Yes, I know if they're going to release newer titles, I can buy them here, but many other distibutors release newer games. It's one of GOG's main advantage of releasing older titles for low prices, DRM-free.

They just added Populous 2 to their catalogue. I guess the oldies still the priority.

Heres what happened -

GOG wanted to release newer games from different publishers, but stick to their 'NO DRM' policy.

Other publishers went 'whaaaaaaa!!!' and said no, it will hurt sales / profits .

GOG said 'No it won't - look, we'll prove it!' and sold Witcher2 on the site - its done rather well percentage of sales wise.

Other publishers suddenly realise 2 things -
a) be seen to support no DRM = good vibes for company, positive rep = extra sales
b) NO DRM Does work and doesn't affect profits in any perceivable way.

Don't forget the only thing Publishers worry about is MONEY - Witcher2 was a test case - as soon as they realised it wasn't hurting sales in any way they become more receptive to the idea of selling newer games on our favourite digital platform!

S'all good, as far as I can see - newer games without DRM? Bring it on!
