Kristian: Why should I have to manually manage 100s of patches?
I feel the same, almost 700 games makes it a pain in the butt to manually update and even worse to locate and delete old *exe files. Having a function built into the UI which can "detect" old patches, executables, or even FLAC.zip, and give me the option to download new, overwrite, delete, rename, etc, would be of huge benefit.

More options built into the UI is a good thing. Those who want to use it for simply downloading are able, those who need more options can also benefit.

GoG could be milking the system like many others, but instead they choose to sacrifice some profit in exchange for morality and for that I will always support them where I can.

Zacron: That depends on how many games you have. But right now, in order to conserve the essence of the DRM-Free movement, you need to install the patches or reinstall the game with the patches already done. However, on GOG, this is incredibly easy, download the patch, install it, delete the patch. That is literally all that is required. No configuration files, no temp files, nothing. And I still prefer this method to Steam.
Agreed. Currently GoG give the choice of using a simple client to download or allow the ability to do it manually.

trusteft: How about just sending a simple EMAIL to the owners of games which get an update? With the option to receive such an email every time there is an update or once a month/week..
No client will be necessary for updates.

The current system with having just an updated notification under My Games is easily missed, forgotten, glitchy. and it just works as a pressure point for the creation of a client.

I don't want more clients. I am sick of clients.

HGiles: We don't need a client. Email works perfectly..
Only works when you have a limited number of games, and their current client informs you about updates. The people with the most games are the ones who require help in this area. If GoG upgrade the Client, they wont force people to use it just as they don't currently force people to use it.

It's just an option for people who need it, and I really need it.

Ebany: You are correct. I believe it's first mention was Homer's Odyssey, the attack on Troy. At this time it was all city-states.
avatar
Phc7006: Actually, no one knows. The Trojan war is traditionally linked with the Troy IV site. The Greek in question were Mycenean, whose political structures are unknown. While a large state is clearly excluded, it's not clear whether they were organised in city states as classical Greeks were. Homer obviously transposed contemporary concepts into his story. As for Trojans, they appear to have been indo-europeans, their language thought to be close to Luwian (Hittite ). They might have been one of the "sea people" . Or, as some archeological finds suggest, link with Danubian / Carpathian bronze age settlements.
Very true, but I only refer to it's first mention. I'm unaware of any earlier written works which make mention of the Trojan Horse.

HGiles: Also, the Pope is Catholic

OneFiercePuppy: The Pope is Jesuit. In a religion of rectangles, he's a square. Sure, they're all rectangles; but he's more so. =)
Who can tell with those religious people, so many factions it's hard to know who believe in what :)

I guess, my real hope here is that anything they announce will somehow lead to more highly-desired (preferably good old) games coming. Theoretical examples: "GOG Wallet" in place to pay back those "shafted" by regional pricing, thus bringing some of Take 2's classic X-COM titles (assuming regional pricing was the thing holding them back); Multiplayer servers that could maybe help out a Homeworld release; as suggested by BJ - if possible, different DRM-free media being sold, eventually showing Disney and/or CBS/Paramount the virtues of releasing the LucasArts and/or Star Trek games.

Can't wait.. :)

Hope it has to do with better game support when it comes to patches or possibly some kind of client.

We may be thinking about different things. A single email when there is n+ updates with the list of updated games wouldn't be that big deal. An email per game might be.

The current downloader needs to be turned on before it talks about updates, and then only gives # of games updated. It's exactly the same problem as the website notification.

Fair enough. Thanks for the info. :)

So its looking likely there will be a GOG client in the near future. I'm not too sure how I feel about this, but I can't see them making it mandatory for any games as that defeats the purpose of being a DRM Free store. I hope it will work fine with individual installers as I by far prefer to keep my installers downloaded and backed up. This made a difference for me as recently as a week ago.

I was without broadband at home for nearly three weeks due to a screw up by the phone company. But all my GOG games worked just fine as I had the installers backed up and could install and play them whenever I want. So as long as stand alone updates remain, its fine. I just hope maintaining a client doesn't cause a lot of resources to be pulled from other aspects of GOG.

Looking forward to the stream. Keep up the good work guys!
If they do make a client, it would not be manditory or drm, only an option for us users.
I would welcome a gog client, specially if it helped us find users for multiplayer-gog gaming. (yes some games are ip to ip, and isn't safe, but as long as you agree to connect to a friend or someone you know, you can cut that risk)

I wonder if gog will make it so if you buy TW3 on steam, that you can redeem it on gog....
SADLY, I bought my witcher games here on gog.com, and can't redeem them on steam :( cry, I would have to spend double the money to also own them on steam.
I just want some big, good classics to be announced. Command & Conquer series, Homeworld series or any other good classics from the publishers already on gog would make me happy, SimCity 4 releasing was a good example of this. Doesn't even have to be a new big publisher coming on board, though that would be nice too. I understand it's tough to get the rights to sell some of those, but....

Improvements and added features to the site or an optional client would be "okay" I guess, but I doubt I would ever really use them much as i'm just fine with the site as is. I'm not really all for using a client as gog's downloader has had a somewhat wonky history with some users here, that's why I just use my browser to download my games here.

Can't say i'm really interested in the possibility of gog selling DRM-free movies, books, comics, etc. (if the speculation comes true), unless they could manage to get some really rare anime and Asian live action stuff that's hard to get ahold of.

IAmSinistar: Most of the "what will the surprise be" guesses emanate from the poster's personal wish (or fear). So let me continue that pattern and say the announcement will be a GOG/Cloanto deal to bring Amiga games to GOG.
An Insomnia sale dedicated to Amiga game titles = Catatonic state :p

Amiga! Com'on, I don't mind reminiscing about the old days but there's still only so far back I'm willing to degrade myself, Amiga and Commadore 64 is just a little to far back for me (even if it feels like only yesterday) :)

Really? Degrading how? There are lots of oldies (some here, like i.e. PowerMonger and Populous 1) where (IMHO) the Amiga version is far superior to the DOS version - often because of sound. Or are you not too fond of DOS era classics at all? Well nobody forces you to buy them.
For me, bringing Amiga games here would be the greatest danger to my wallet since the invention of coke and hookers (figuratively speaking).

It's degrading for my Extremely expensive gaming rig to run such an archaic piece of software, couldn't even slow the system enough to run one of those Amiga games. It would be like hitching a horse drawn carriage to a Ferrari.

Drowning enemy in Populous was fun when stone tools were common, but some games are just too old. Might as well bring back Mines of Titan, or even my personal favourite, Bandit Kings of Ancient China.

I pity you for being stuck with the latest Crysis/Battlefield/Metro. Perhaps you should get some more humble computer?

Now really, this is like you have that beautiful girlfriend, but she demands a diamond every friggin' time you want to bed her.
