Hello GOG, a few day's ago I tried installing a game from 2002 (Zanzarah: The Hidden Portal), to play this wonderful game again, and bollocks... the autorun ran, but when I clicked "Install Zanzarah" nothing happened. I just get a process setup_32.exe and I can't interact with it anyway. I have Windows 7 64-bit, so that is probably the problem. I even copied the files from the CD onto my desktop and ran the setup under compatibility mode for Windows XP SP3, which I had before and the game ran perfectly.

I really want to play this game again, so if anyone can help me I'd be very grateful.

Thanks,
~Shadowrend
Have you tried running the install as admin (right-click on installer, choose "Run as administrator") as well as using compatibility mode?
That game seems really good. I'm interested in where I can get it.

I think i saw it on Impulse a while back

Edit: Yep, it's there

I have learned this.. Never trust autorun. =) And always use administrator-rights. =)

Edit: too much smileys.

I ran it as admin also (even though I am the admin). Both from the CD and desktop.
Bump.
As you can see on Impulse, it works only on 32-bit systems, sorry.

That's more a demonstration of their competence, small size and or fiscal strength. Most 64 bit OSes provide facilities for running the same 32bit code on 64bit hardware. The only exceptions I can think of are platforms where there never was a 32bit version or ones where they went out and deliberately broke compatibility.

AMD went out of its way to maintain compatibility, and it's usually a matter of making sure the programs use the correct set of libraries.

What did you run, the setup_32.exe or the autorun (you should be running the setup, not the autorun)? Where are you installing the game? Some older games have trouble with the default protections Windows now has on directories like Program Files, so it might be best to install it somewhere else, like C:\Games.

BTW - Since Vista, even if you are the admin, you can't run software with admin permissions unless you specifically tell it to through the "Run as admin" option.

That the Impulse client, not this game.

I ran both the autorun and the setup_32.exe with admin privileges. I have Windows 7 not Vista, and I couldn't even get the loading setup screen, and certainly not the specify directory.

Once again, THE INSTALLATION WON'T EVEN BEGIN, it just shows me the working cursor, and nothing happens, except a process in the task manager. Nothing pop's up or shows up anywhere else.

The same security "features" of Vista are present in Win 7.

It's probably a 16-bit installer then, which will never run on Win 7 64-bit, though you shouldn't even get a running process with that, it should just error out. This is a long shot, but if you happen to still have a Win XP machine, you could try installing the game there, then copy the installed directories/files over to Win 7.
What about virtual box?

PS: Damn it... 4 computers all win7...
I looked through some forums (like here) and it looks like some folks managed to install the game on Win7 x64. They have problems with game itself (freezing / crashing) but the installation was successful. So it isn't 16-bit.

Yeah, I realized after I posted that the game is from 2002 (I was thinking it was older than that); a 16-bit installer would be pretty unlikely. What do you have running for anti-virus and/or personal firewall? One or both of those could certainly interfere with an installer like this.

Virtualbox or VMware would probably work for installing the game, but might not work to actually run the game. The 3D acceleration support in virtual machines like that is not really the greatest and will prevent a lot of games from running properly.
