I see that Risen is for sale on Amazon for $5.99, and from what I hear it's both good and DRMless.

The only problem is that they won't let you pay unless you have a US billing address. Is it safe to make up an address? (or use my actual address but select a US state from the dropdown). It's a download so nothing will need to be delivered.

I've read a number of posts on GOG saying you can just use a US address and you're fine. However, one post I read said to be certain you use a real address, not something just made up off the top of your head. Don't know if that's accurate though.

You need a correct address and zip code (use google) as your delivery address then pay with your normal card.
I've got three or four games on my Amazon.com account. They are steamworks games though, so I don't know anything about the installer. Buying, however, with a fake adress is quite easy. Just google a White Castle.

Or ask a US-based goglodyte if they're willing to shre their address.

OR find a US-based goglodyte that owns a White Castle! How awesome would that be!

Just to be cheeky, try this address:

1200 12th Ave. South, Ste. 1200
Seattle, WA 98144-2734

Amazon's corporate office.

I used a baseball field in Chicago.... I also had the name for delivery as Elwood Blues...

But Washington adds VAT on top of the price. Otherwise, it would be a nice idea :-)
Thanks for the answers. I'll ask around a but to see if someone can "loan" me an address, and failing that I'll look one up. It's DRM-free so as long as I keep a backup there's not too much that can go wrong.

(Using Amazon's office is so tempting... :p )

Hang on, VAT depends on where the buyer is, not the seller? That seems like a complicated way of doing things (but I suppose it does give them an excuse to list the before-VAT price and look cheaper).

Maybe you can just google the address of a hotel? That would give you an actual address, but it wouldn't be one that belongs to a specific person. Or maybe you can try to use this one:

Barefoot_Monkey
1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW
Washington, D.C. 20500

I'm not quite sure, but in the US it is not common to have the VAT included in the price. It gets added at the cashier. Only some states have a law that makes the VAT included in the price (California). You still pay VAT nomatter what, but in certain states it gets added on top, in others its "included".

Edit: The explanation is wrong. But using California still gives you the displayed price.

Interesting. I guess where I live we're spoilt by always being charged exactly what the price tag says.

Very nice idea. I think I'll do that. But not in Washington, because of SimonG's warning.

In the US, since sales tax is handled at the state level, you are only charged tax from an online retailer if they have a physical presence in your state. For example, I live in Tennessee and if I buy anything from Newegg, I have to pay tax since they have a distribution center in the state, even if my product is not shipped from there.

In fact, Amazon is going to open a distribution center here as well, and one of the conditions of that was that Amazon got a waiver for charging tax for Tennesseeans for a few years, since we currently don't have to pay any tax through them.

meh, at least I was close....somewhat ...

But you do add VAT/Sale Tax only at the counter in at least some states right? right?!!?
