SimonG: But you do add VAT/Sale Tax only at the counter in at least some states right? right?!!?
In all of them, except for California apparently, which I didn't know about. And then there are some states, like Delaware, with no sales tax.

There are some special cases where the tax is rolled into the listed price, like gasoline, but usually advertised prices are always pre-tax.

That part about california was my assumption only, because I didn't have to pay with a californian adress. So don't quote me ;-)

Actually, I looked it up and California looks to be the same as the rest of the states. You wouldn't have had to pay a sales tax because Amazon has no operations there.

Barefoot_Monkey: Very nice idea. I think I'll do that. But not in Washington, because of SimonG's warning.
SimonG was talking about Washington state, not Washington D.C. Although the situation in D.C. might be the same, I'm not sure.
Here are lists of what states have to pay tax when purchasing from Amazon.

"Items sold by Amazon.com LLC, or its subsidiaries, and shipped to destinations in the states of Kansas, Kentucky, New York, North Dakota, or Washington are subject to tax."

Thanks again to everyone. I used spindown's address and it seems there was no extra tax. As an added bonus, it turns out that US dollars are fairly cheap tonight.

Dude, you DO KNOW what address that was?!

This is the perfect premise for an episode of the West Wing, honestly.

Nope. Judging from the reactions - it was the White House, wasn't it? Ah well, at least it worked.

I'm glad you moved into the White House. You can't possibly do any worse than Bush did ;)
