Hey, I was curious. Do any of you guys make your own business cards? If so, what do you use? Are there free templates or what not out there? I have found a few here and there, so I figured I'd ask here. Wife is hassling me to get my name out and get more computer repair jobs, so I am fixin' to do up some fliers and business cards. Thanks.
Try http://www.free-business-card-templates.com/.
Thanks for the suggestion. I have actually checked there. I have googled a few sites here and there, I am more looking for those hidden gems, or something that is really good that I may be able to tweak in GIMP. (I know good is really just a matter of perspective, but still.)

Those templates come in a JPEG format. Surely, that would allow you to tweak a given template in GIMP or any other PS software...
It depends on how nice you want them.
My brother ordered a bunch from Victoria's Secret and they were very nice (cost him about 200 pounds), but that's for a more business setting.

Oh and of course:

Yeah, they will allow for tweaking, I just wasn't too fond of what I had found there, but again, I do appreciate the recommendation!

Thanks, that is kind of like what I am looking for, has a lot of different examples, and gives me some interesting ideas, and they have a small free sampler pack (bonus).

Can't give you any info on templates but I can relate the process I use. I create a 300 to 600 ppi at 2" x 3 1/2" (or your card stock size) Photoshop psd file and layout my card with text / logo etc. I save the psd for future edits and save a fairly large jpg of the card image. I pop that into a business card template found in MS Word and print on Avery Two-side Printable Clean Edge Business Card stock. I like this card stock but any brand will do.

There was a time I did each card in the Word template but quickly learned it was much easier to design the card in PS or another image program and simply paste the image to each cell.
My father and uncle have ordered from this people quite a few times. Vistaprint

You're welcome . . . =)

Edit: This may also be of help (I have never used it BTW)

"Avery’s Design & Print Online tool (www.avery.com/print) contains thousands of free pre-designed templates that are easy to customize. It’s completely Internet-based, so there is no software to download and is compatible with both PC and Mac® operating systems. You can easily import your own images, graphics or logos, and can save your projects on your computer for easy editing and reprinting."

I will check them out as well. I just was out of ideas, and most of the stuff I had come up with wasn't that great. I still need to do a few things, but I want a couple started cards out and about. I am looking to get DBA sometime soon, so til then, I am going to just have to make up something without a business name, but still. I don't have anything that I really bothered saving. My artistic ability is limited to sprite editing Mugen characters, thus the need for the advice/templetes...LOL
Have you tried a local print shop?

For my own needs I hit up a local shop to help with the logo and card layout, and then used them for printing the cards and one other document. The 500 cards, with logo design, was something like $30. I went to a few clipart sites, snagged some public domain elements, and merged them into a rough idea of what I wanted. Gave the basic files and my rough layout to the printer, told them what I wanted the finished product to look like, and it took them maybe 15 minutes to do the graphic work. After adding adding in my text, it was ready to go. Super simple, and cheap.

WRT business name... take a look at the business site of your state government to see what you have to do to get a name. To find where to go, I searched for "business name registration" [state] and it took me to the appropriate place. It was a one-time fee of $11 to get the name I wanted; hopefully it's that cheap for you, as well. For a sole proprietor, that's about all it takes to get a DBA going though you may also need to dink around with licenses and sales tax numbers, depending on your state's rules (check with all states involved if you're going to work across borders). In order to cash checks under the business name, I opened a biz savings account at my bank, directly linked to my personal accounts, basically as a placeholder so I can accept checks written to the business.

This.

Print-your-own business cards always end up spelling "Fail, Ltd.". The culprit is not the name, or the design, or the printer or the ink, but the print-your-own stock.

Commercially printed business cards are so cheap that if the business is worth pursuing at all, it is worth pursuing with properly made cards.

Thanks for the additional information. I will look into using a local print shop or an online shop for the final drafts. I am currently just trying to basically setup a prototype to work with, and possibly have a few on hand until I can make an order. I have avoided clip-art sites so far, due to the fact that sometimes some of the clip art isn't as free-to-use as they indicate, not that I would likely be caught anyway, especially with a small computer repair business.

As far as the other side of what you said, I do know that, atleast here, you have to register with the county clerk's office to get a DBA. I believe that is 15 or so dollars, then you have to run an add in the local paper for 3 weeks indicating you will be DBA whatever you company name is.

I have been working on some TOS and other documents to accompany my work, and to cover my butt, I just have to finish them and have an attorney look over them. Still stuck on the name I want to use, but I still have other stuff to finish before I can do that. Up until now, I have just be "that computer guy" that a group of clients of mine call to get their computers fixed, but it doesn't pull enough money, so I need better advertising, which means fliers, ads, business cards, and an actual company name.
