I don't like windows, the only thing that stil keeps me using it is the games, for everything else, linux

Player_01: Personally I like a nice blank desktop which I can use to slide show my pictures folder while having all my apps neatly filed in order under that start menu.
Fine then. The current desktop will be the default desktop on Win 8 PCs... The touch start screen will be default in tablets and similar devices.

Apple, Google and the "apps economy" can go fuck themselves into their rotten butts. I want my PROGRAMS and GAMES FROM THE NINETIES to run on my operating system, so I'm less than uninterested to the Metro UI being ported on the desktop. I like Metro UI just on my WP7 phone, I could consider it for a non-Apple-shit tablet, I WON'T NEVER ACCEPT IT for a proper computer.

Yes it is, especially when you the number of messages you've received, tweets from your followers, weather, which friends are online on XBOX LIVE, your alarm info, missed calls, and other useful stuff.

Issues related to security: no support for complex encryption, lack of vpn,... less than capable windows software clones, program incompatibilities. I find it ironic it's its lack of functionality that is criticized, while Microsoft could have been in the position of providing a 'does it all' system staying true to their PC roots.

Program incompatabilities? I've been using Optimus 7 for several months, don't really understand what you mean by program incompatibilities...

By the way, check out the Mango update coming in September, some functionalities that you think are missing may be coming with it. ;)

Think ill wait 5 years till they fix the 1 million bugs that will be released with version 8. I am actually quite content with windows 7 so dont need to change thank you Mr Microsoft.

I consider myself lucky for not using a smartphone :P
I'm just so put off by Microsoft's close-mindedness in regard to what you may install or not, anything not from them is banished or copied in some inferior way...
Windows Operating System for PC I can customize to some extent and install the stuff I want.
Rereading myself I actually see how this could also apply to Apple (not as bad though), Google is not as restrictive on the other hand they're not as 'open' as they pretend to be.

I stay away as much as possible from all these phone shenanigans, but it also comes back to bite me if one of my friends or family members have some trouble with their handheld device :P

Can't talk about the homebrew part (if you were refering to that), as I don't own iPhone or an Android device to have homebrew tested on them, but for marketplace apps, restrictions are a must.

Just look at Android's marketplace the last few months. Many apps are actually malware!

Also, Microsoft will be introducing new APIs and will open the platform more with the Mango update, that's why I mentioned it previously, in there might be something you like.

Oh, and the whole update "horror" stories... they have nothing to do with Microsoft actually, it is Samsung the bad guy here. Two phones, Omnia and Focus... with a dozen different firmwares for no good reason, and what else not. :) Other manufacturers have been error free.

EDIT: Sorry if I sound like a Microsoft fanboy, I'm just happy with my WP device. :p

To be honest, many apps you find on the web browsing with Windows are also malware which only shows how open the platform is. So I actually consider that a positive point :P (If I had to choose between Windows Phone, IPhone, Android Phone in the case I were to get a fancy smartphone, it'd be android all the way)

In house sabotage maybe? Since they have many Android Phones.

Homebrew isn't an issue you pay 65 bucks for full access and it codes exactly like xbox indie games do infact they come bundled together now you can submit indie games and phone apps at will. Compare to Iphone where the only IDE you're allowed to use is available for Mac only and requires a submission fee everytime and your submissions MUST come from a mac
