Hey guys

I was playing Still life and today it didn't start anymore. Restarted pc, still the game persisted. It does try to start, it changes my desktop but then ... nothing. The only thing i can think of that changed is that i updated my videocard driver.

I am not changing it back just for still life, so i was thinking: does anybody had this problem with still life or any other gog and how did you get it fixed? Did gog release a newer version?

I am not sure however it's because of a driver issue but this is really annoying and could cripple gog in the long run. They sell "fixed" versions of old games but after some time (some updates) they no longer work, just like before.... I hope this is not a common issue....
Have you tried contacting support? And really, if it worked until you updated your driver then this may be the issue.
Sometimes newer drivers are incompatibile with older games. Several times I had to downgrade my drivers for an old game.

It's common issue, but I don't know if it's for Still Life , too.

As the_bard said, contact GOG support.
Personally, I'd recommend contacting Microids support over GOG. GOG doesn't really have a lot they can do when it comes to supporting the games they sell, because they don't have access to any kind of source code and don't really handle the patching side of things. Better to go to the official source if they still exist.

It might not hurt to try both anyway, though.
Uh, it's obvious, but did you try reinstalling the game itself?

No i will try this later on though
It's definitly a driver problem because they already have a new driver and now the game starts but only shows a black screen...

Video card driver updates can easily introduce issues with things that were working fine. Games are highly dependent on them.

You say you wouldn't roll back your driver just for still life, but was there a problem you are overcoming by the upgrade, or do you just feel like you should be running the newest driver? If nothing was wrong with your system before and now something is wrong and its actually keeping you from doing something you clearly had plans to do, then I would recommend you at least consider restoring the working driver and put off the update for awhile.

You can also try changing video card settings around though that is hit or miss business. Reinstalling might help erase configuration conflicts that could be causing the issue, but its not great odds.

That being said its worth pointing out to GOG and/or your vid card maker that their update may be causing issues. Sometimes those issues are sacrifices for progress(like direct draw support) but maybe its just a bug they introduced and worth saying something about.

If you do report it to someone be specific as to what game, game version, driver version, video card, you have and possibly anything you know about your motherboard and processor when reporting the issue. Also make sure everything else is working or not.

You've stated the game was working. Any changes made to the system are your responsibility.

You may have received some detailed advice if you'd stated what video card and driver version you're using.

Did you run an appropriate utility (eg driver sweeper) to fully remove the old drivers before installing the new ones ?

Did you have any specific game settings in the video cards control panel that may have been reset\deleted ?

Have you checked the video forums to see if anybody else is having problems with that version of the drivers ?

I do realise this was a specific issue on my end. I was just pointing it out that in fact if this is a common issue (and it is not, as someone stated already) this could prove to be a problem for a lot of gog's. That was the purpose of this topic. It wasn't created in a "boo gog suck" sense because i adore gog. (example: what if a windows update makes dosbox useless, that would cause a lot of problems, what do we do then, etc.)

It's a nvidia driver and i was under the impression that usually updating your drivers is a good thing...

I am trying to fix it on my end but as i stated this topic was not created to bully gog or ask for specific help for still life (i would have created it in the right subforum then) but help is appreciated none the less. My inintial post probably wasn't too clear about that and for that my apologies.

This is just PC gaming, honestly. GOG don't have the power to make the platform more reliable than it is.

Usually a quick google search or GOG forum search will solve your problem though.

it is for new games. that's why new drivers get released.
UPDATE: i fixed the issue and like i stated (and many answered: it was a driver issue, but also in combination with my own tries to fix it and by doing so I made it even worse ;) )

So what did you do to fix it? Just so that no one else needs to bang his head to a cactus, like we use to say here in Mexico.

I updated the driver (again) (there seemed to be something wrong with it since the newest one followed so soon) and made sure everything was back to how it was. So if you change nothing or use the driver that they have now (nvidia) you should be fine ;)
