That's what I thought and went out and protested like hell when they put one in my park. I read somewhere that it was the American delegation that was requiring all sorts of ridiculous security measures and that's why we had missiles and an aircraft carrier in London.

While this thread is more base on what society does in the name of 'security', lets not forget what society does in the name of 'safety'

Recently here in Australia there was an elderly man who died after getting upset because police got him for riding his bike (push bike) without a helmet.

I can imagine that this man has probably lived his whole life without even giving a thought to his freedom to choose weather or not to wear a helmet. Now in the twilight of his life he is confronted with this idiocy.... i mean you and i are probably more used to the 'nanny state' but the older generations, it must seem so completely stupid to them?

I agree with your entire post but I just wanted to quote that bit and say that I don't see how I can vote in the next election. I've always voted in the past and it's not suddenly out of apathy but out of a shared disgust for the candidates, I don't see anyone who's remotely fit for the power.
