The whole end of the world thing comes from the fact that tracing the mayan calander back finds 2 seperate cataclysmic events at the end of the last 2 mayan eras.

If it resets at 18.0.0.0.0, but apparently it resets at 13.0.0.0.0 so it would be 0.0.0.0.1
It works like a normal calender, after Dec 31 is Jan 1.

I guess it's up in the air whether there are 13 or 20 bak'tuns. The pages I had looked at said 20, but yeah, with 13, it would just roll over, like you said.

It still fascinate me that despite there is nothing in the Mayan scripts that predict the end of the world (as far as I know). Much of what we know today comes from an archeologist (or cryptologist?) that interpreted many of the tablets and other findings. Can't remember his name right now, but, there have been others too..

Even the conquistadors destroyed information - and later, who knows? All I know is that much has been lost throughout the history, and we can only wait and see.
