I was reading a review of an independently developed Roguelike, and it mentioned Castle of the Winds. This sparked in me a bit of nostalgia, and since I knew it was freeware, I looked up a site called "The Temple of Odin", which has all the latest CotW files for download. My problem now is that I don't know how to run Windows 3.x apps in a Windows 7 environ. Just for the hell of it, I tried setting compatibility to Windows 95, but that didn't work. Any bright ideas?

CotW (both 1 & 2) were awesome fun. No sound, simple tile-based graphics, but just a really fun game that I keep coming back to every couple years or so.

I just got Win7 myself, and it didn't occur to me to seek out a way to run CotW again.

As seems to be the case with Windoze 7, CoTW works on some machines :

Are you running 32 or 64 bit Windows 7? Because Windows 3.x executables are (as far as I know) only 16 bit. 32 bit processors can do 16 and 32, but 64 bit ones can only do 32 and 64.

If you're running 64 bit, I think your best bet is some kind of emulation or virtual machine.

64-bit. I tried running it in XP mode, and no go. I even tried creating a "Windows Game Profile" in the D-Fend Reloaded frontend for DOSBox, because my logical process lead me to believe that a DOSBox frontend might cover Windows 3.x games. Unfortunately, what happened was that when I tried to run the CASTLE1.exe under the "Windows Game Profile" settings, D-Fend told me that "CASTLE1 is a DOS executable, you should really create a DOS profile for it". And so I did, but when I ran it, D-Fend then told me that "CASTLE1 is a Windows executable, you should really create a Windows profile for it".

[EDIT]
Hold up. After applying Windows Updates in XP Mode, it works now. I don't know which, but it do'd it.

Yay! Just be glad you have Professional and not Home Premium like I do.

p.s. Can I have solution credit? ;D
Awww this brings me back to a nice bit of nostalgia myself. I used to love the Castle of the Winds games. I guess I stand corrected in thinking I haven't really played a Roguelike title, since I played these two games a lot as a kid. I'll have to get my paws on them.
Castle of the Winds was my first computer RPG, I remember being really impressed by its depth.

I have Ultimate. I had to get the Ultimate edition because I only wanted the upgrade package because I already had Windows Vista Ultimate, and as I understood it, I could only upgrade from Vista Ultimate to 7 Ultimate, and not to 7 Pro or Home Premium. It's better that I have Ultimate anyway, because I make much use of security tokens and dongles.
How could I miss a thread about castle of the winds? O_o I love castle of the winds ;-;
How can it be that with a thread title like that, noone has made a fart joke?

This really is a classy community

Since the thread has been necro'ed anyway, let me make an important distinction: 32 bit operating systems can do 16 and 32, but 64 bit ones can only do 32 and 64. All PC processors have been 64 bit for many years now.
