A Song of Ice and Fire series

Or, you could watch the HBO show Game of Thrones. Either way you can't miss. Personally I'm going the route of watching the show and then reading the books, but rarely has something been so engrossing and interesting to me that it has inspired me to read.

I meant that he'll be disappointed by how bad the show is in comparison to the books. But waiting for the next one sucks as well :P when is the 6th book due, 2013? 2014? Something like that...
I've got a highly thought-provoking book called The Collected What If? - Eminent Historians Imagine What Might Have Been.

It examines pivotal moments throughout history (from ancient to more recent times) and speculates on the consequences of the opposite outcome. Like the South winning the Civil War, for instance. Or if Hitler got his way.

What If? is a very large "counterfactual" book edited by Robert Cowley. The different essays are written by various historians. I've read a little bit from time to time. A neat book, I must say.

I would stay away from such books if I were you. I read a few of them and they are extremely speculative, and usually revolve around 10 subjects or so, all of them involving the same incidents and the same conclusions :

-What would have happened if Hitler won the war?
-He would've conquered the world and killed everybody.

-What would have happened if Columbus never discovered America?
-The Aztecs would've conquered the world and killed everybody

-What would have happened if the South won the war?
-They would have conquered the world and kill everybody.

Then again, I might not have read the right ones :)

Well i've watched the tv series Deadliest Warrior, and that is very speculative. But also very interesting what if scenario's.

The one where they "analyze" what would happen if a viking fought Pikachu? :P

Fair enough; I'll list the contents!

"Infectious Alternatives: The Plague That Saved Jerusalem, 701 B.C."
"No Glory That Was Greece"
"Conquest Denied: The Premature Death of Alexander the Great"
"Furor Teutonicus: The Teutoburg"
"The Dark Ages Made Lighter"
"The Death That Saved Europe"
"The What Ifs of 1914"
....Jeez, there's wayyy more here. Huh...
"If Lincoln Had Not Freed the Slaves" (O__O)'

Like I said, the book's huge. But at least it isn't all gloom-and-doom! :D
I have found something really good.
But it's first and second rule is that I can't talk to you about it

(If nobody gets it, I'll post the books name).

Hmm... Sounds more interesting than the ones I read. I'll have to give it a try:) BTW, that "Conquest Denied: The Premature Death of Alexander the Great" ... It doesn't end in "Persians conquered the world and killed everybody", does it?:P

This is why I watch the show first, no disappointment, at least not to the point where I'd care much.

My advice would be to stick to the first season(which was really good) and just skip the others and read the books. They're amazing...

It is. It's actually one of the few cases where the movie is better than the book. Although some of Pallahniuk's other books are even better, you should give them a try :)
