Gazoinks: Just to clarify once and for all for everyone: BLACK MESA DOES NOT REQUIRE A SOURCE GAME. THE SDK IS FREE TO DOWNLOAD FOR EVERYONE.
avatar
ne_zavarj: You don't need the Source SDK 2007 ?
You do, but it's a free download and doesn't require a Source game.

Fenixp: All right, first big complaint - soldiers have accuracy and reaction times of gods themselves.
The AI is pretty much exactly the same as the original's. Which is one thing even the purists probably wouldn't have minded seeing updated. But yeah, I can't really complain. It's not like AI has really moved on at all since HL1.
It has popped up in Desura now, if people would like an alternative download:

http://www.desura.com/mods/black-mesa
damn. The download seems to have been corrupted (ModDB). Won't open either file.

Where did everyone else get it?

Torrents.

There's a few on TPB but I imagine the blues won't accept links. Use google.

Nirth: Torrents.
Well there's a torrent link even on the official site. This one.
Where the heck is my crowbar? Did I really miss it?

I've yet again failed to finish HL 2. Is Black Mesa worth trying if you loved HL 1 all those years ago but couldn't be bothered by HL 2?

It shows up a little bit later on than it does in the original - I think it's set up so that it's impossible to miss (I could be wrong, though).

Yes!

Dude, it's free. It's not really a hard choice, especially since most opinions have been positive.

Ah yes, got it. So maybe my mind was not playing tricks on me after all, it seemed odd I had to run from some facehuggers.

I must say the magic of HL1 is still showing, even this day and age. With most newer FPS games (including Half-life 2, but some quite recent ones too) I get bored with the scripted parts and hand holding, but for some reason I still find the same hilarious on HL1. Somehow I got hooked playing this again, and at the same time I have an urge to play the "originals" (Source remakes?) again too. Especially if this version is not complete, and missing also the mini-sequels.

Damn...

I think it goes like this:

1. Install Steam client to your Windows PC.

2. Skip this step if you have an existing Steam account you can use for Black Mesa: if you don't have a Steam account already, start the Steam client and create one. Maybe exit the Steam client after creating an account.

3. Run the Black Mesa installer (BlackMesa-Setup.exe). Let it install it into your Steam directory (default). You must also have the file BlackMesa.7z. There's usually also the checksum file BlackMesa.md5, I don't know if the installer uses it for anything, maybe it is not needed.

4. After it is installed, open your Steam client, and Black Mesa should be added to you game list. After that the Steam client might want to download the SDK before you can play the game.

Or then I misunderstood what you were asking.

I think several enemies fire faster than in HL1 (although I've spent the most time playing Sven-Coop, but I don't think that was changed). E.g. Houndeyes used to take a long time preparing for their first shockwave. It was really easy to kill them with the crowbar without getting hurt.
