anjohl: So I think its down to HOMMIII or UT2K4.

Well, it's your decision of course. Personally, I don't have the patience to play turn based games in multiplayer mode (although I like them as singleplayer games), but if that's what you like, then go for it.

anjohl: Are both fully online supported by GOG? I have heard that a lot of gog's don't work online anymore.

As far as I know, all copies of UT2004 from GOG come with the same CD key. This is usually not a problem, but in the rare cases where it is, it's as easy as emailing GOG support, and they'll send you a new, unique CD key. There are certainly still plenty of people playing UT2004 online. More than there are people playing UT3, in fact.

UT2004 works fine. I've played against people with GOG copies.
Heroes: Soldiers of WWII
It's pretty fun and challenging to play through this game with a friend on coop.

honorbuddy: UT2k4 works fine online, I am pretty sure a month or so ago GOG had some servers running although they took those down. I know you said no FPS, but it is a lot of fun.

I said no *generic* FPS. UT2004 has vehicles, so that's fine.

Only in Onslaught. But that mode's worth the asking price by itself. There's also Vehicle CTF, but there aren't any maps in the retail version for it so the mode doesn't even appear on the list until you add some user made maps.
But there are other modes like Domination and Bombing Run that certainly add to the variety.

Domination is a work of genius. Your team has to hold two pads and prevent the other team from touching either one of them for like 15 seconds. My favorite maps in this category are those designed so that you can see the other pad waaaay across on the other side of the level, allowing the defending team's two groups to snipe and help each other out.
Bombing run alone gets UT2004 out of generic FPS territory, imho. It's a sort of extreme sports football type game with all the standard weapons and a ball. When you have the ball, you can't use any of your weapons and you move slower until you get rid of it by firing your ball launching gun. It's a lot of fun to make a pass to a team mate over rough terrain; or fire the ball upwards, headshot an enemy team member directly in front of you, and catch the ball when it comes down.
Even instaglib CTF is reasonably unique. One shot from an enemy will kill you, but taking a shot from a team mate will blast you forward into the air. Combined with the sniper-rife scope, it opens up some interesting possibilities.

I love UT2004 as well as all the other Unreal games.

Why doesn't anyone ever play bombing run online? It's a really fun and unique game mode.

The map balancing felt a little off on many of them. The Egyptian tomb themed one was easily my favourite as it allowed for multiple routes without making defence impossible.

Technically, that is Double Domination. "Ordinary" Domination was a gamemode in the original UT99, where you had a number of control points (usually 3, but I think some maps had more than 3), which periodically gave points to the team that controlled them. Personally, I prefer that mode over Double Domination, because I think it makes for much more varied and interesting gameplay.
Oh, I never played that. That does sound fun. I'm guessing they went for DD
a. in order to tighten up the action/make it more frantic and
b. because it's easier to design mirrored maps. ;-)
There must be a mod around someplace to restore the old gametype. I mean, what are the odds?
Anyone know roughly have "alive" UT2k4 still is? Is it still easy to find regional servers (with good ping) with a decent number of people? Xfire reports around 1000 of it's users play it daily, but I'm not sure how much that number tells me.
Still enough people playing that you should beable to find a game in one of the more popular modes, deathmatch, teamdeathmatch and onslaught. Probably a couple hundred people on at any given time. Alot of the people that still play online seem to be of a fairly high skill level now though.

Last I checked (which wasn't that long ago) the servers were very much alive and well. Even the modding community is still churning out quality mods for the game. Overall, I'd say it's in better shape than UT3.

I wouldn't be a bit surprised to learn that UT2K3 is in better shape than UT3. I just reinstalled UT3 and the situation is dismal as hell. Every server has bots on it. The populated servers seem to be pubstomp fests but I only bothered playing on a few of them before uninstalling again for the third or fourth time.
What's happened with UT2K4 seems to be a common side effect plaguing games with strong communities. One game variant, usually the favorite, reaches a sort of critical mass where the best servers are focused on it and even advertise the fact with their names. More maps get made for that game type, and the maps available get tested and sorted more rigorously. If the variant wasn't superior to begin with, it eventually becomes superior due to the wealth of good material and the enthusiasm of the people playing.
Of course the down side is if you don't like Onslaught mode you can't really play UT2K4.
Not GOG but no longer Steam-only and uses UT2K4's engine: Killing Floor. It still attaches itself to Steam but you can get it on disc now for $20. It's entirely a coop game, and unlike Left 4 Deadcraft there's not a "correct" way to approach every encounter, so it's actually fun & unpredictable and the mood stays light.
I didn't see Giants: Citizen Kabuto or Fallout Tactics mentioned. Neither has what many people would call "good" multiplayer, but it's because Giants is imbalanced and Tactics is awkward. Also no one ever plays them, but if you have some friends who will follow you into hell for a few hours they might be worth a try. Fallout Tactics is widely despised (albeit mostly by the incurably pissed off Fallout community) but Giants is a wonderful single player game and the balance issues shouldn't matter if you're playing with friends. (I haven't done this in years, so be sure it's still even possible. It might not be.)
Not GOG, but free and a classic: SubSpace, aka Continuum now that it's player-run. Simple top-down space fights in mazes with casual competition and a focus on teamwork. It's been a long time since I played, but different game variants are alive and I think the leagues are still going.
