Here is my criteria:
Not system heavy
Not a generic FPS
Not super-competitive.
Not a racing game.
Anyone?

Duke Nukem 3D. I suppose the FIRST UT would count as not generic.

What's UT:2K4 like, any idea? I played UTIII a bit (Got collectors edition for $10!!), but I have to run it on very low settings.

Imagine UT3 but better. But that's rather objective, but all I can say is that a lot of people still play it, mods are plentiful, and probably any computer made in the past few years will run it.
Quite clearly UT2k4 or the original UT. My old Acer-laptop from 2006 runs UT2k4 fluently at 60+ fps with everything maxed, it's not system heavy at all considering the quite good graphics in the game. They're both very un-generic considering the multitude of gamemodes available.
There are still plenty of people of various skill levels playing UT2k4. The original UT is approaching the state of Quake multiplayer in terms of it's playerbase - only hardcore fans are left which means you're likely to get WTFPWND upon joining any game.
There's also some strategy games that support multiplayer, although it can be a reeeeaaal hassle to get it working properly considering their age.
Heroes of Might and Magic III. Small maps for quickies, huge maps for days of fun. :D

Seconded.
And HoMM2 too (depends on personal preferences).
If its just multiplayer with a couple of friends then sacred is good fun if you like action rpgs. Think the actual online community is dead now but I think you can run it over hamachi. If not you were going to play with random people then I'll second UT2k4 as your best bet, I can get fairly competative though depending on the game mode.
UT2004 is the ultimate LAN game. Only StarCraft or WarCraft III come close.
Once you get tired of the main game, there's enough mods and maps to keep going for a long, long time.
I'm not sure if I'd get it if I already had UT3. A few of the UT2004 game types are different and I hear it's got a larger player base. It also plays a little slower and seems to be more tactics oriented than it's successor. On the other hand, you'll be much more competitive with a slower computer.
UT2004, hands down. The sheer amount of mods alone means you'll be getting lots of different games for your money, but it is in itself one of the best multiplayer games ever made. My gaming community plays it regularly every 18 days.

So I think its down to HOMMIII or UT2K4. Are both fully online supported by GOG? I have heard that a lot of gog's don't work online anymore.
UT2k4 works fine online, I am pretty sure a month or so ago GOG had some servers running although they took those down. I know you said no FPS, but it is a lot of fun.
If you can get over its 'generic FPS' nature then UT2004 is easily the best multiplayer game on GOG.

I don't know about UT2K4, but HOMMIII can be a pain. I use Tunngle as the easiest solution.
What's wrong with all of you? DBTS is the king of multiplayer games!

if one can get it to work with multiplayer, that is.
