It might have been made clear in other threads, but even though I am a PC gamer and can build a gaming PC from parts I am generally pretty technologically illiterate. You guys are my knowledge bank.

So... I want to take some of my movies and TV shows overseas with me on my laptop's HDD. Currently they are on DVDs. What is a good way to get the video off the DVDs and onto the HDD since I obviously cannot take my whole DVD collection with me overseas? I am going for a year, so I want to take a lot of content.

I googled and found a lot of cracking programs and burning programs but most of them seemed to be trials and the ones I tried seemed to limit how much you could burn to some stupidly small amount.

So if anyone could suggest a certain program or other method I would be grateful.

Wowzers .. this is not an easy thing. It's been a year or so since I had to do this, but it's a lot of work and with all sorts of potential issues: syncing problems, codec problems, quality issues, etc. It's not something you can easily do and you'll need to invest a lot of time to find the ideal settings to your liking.

When I get home, I'll take a look at the programs I used but you basically need:

- a program to decrypt the DVD and rip it to your hard drive
- a program to convert the DVD files to single file

It's up to you to decide which codec you prefer to use - Xvid, Divx, H264, WMV, etc.

In any case, avoid most paid software - the huge majority is badly written and causes all sorts of issues while lacking the depth & options you need to properly convert a movie.

Red_Avatar: Wowzers ..
An equally useful answer if true would simply be "no way dude, buy a disc binder."

When I wanted to rip a bunch of my movies and was looking for a way to do so, a friend gave me DVD43 and 1ClickCopyDVD. The latter is not free though, but they work great for almost every disc I wanted to rip. I only ran into two that they couldn't rip.
I have always had VERY good results using Handbrake.
Very simple to use and a reasonable variety of output options.

I tried that and the PC version is very wonky to say the least.
Ripping DVD movies takes alot of time. What i suggest is to buy a simple cd case for 100 or even 1000 dvds and take it with you. It doesn't take much space.

Something like this:

I've bought similar case to store 100 cds and paid 2$ for this :P And don't worry, your dvds should be safe there.

No cracking, no ripping is necessary, and not so much space.

Sad to hear it - the Mac version has always been rock-solid for me.
I guess I won't keep recommending it for people until I try the win version.
It is a while since I did this but I successfully used DVDFab HD Decrypter to backup video DVDs on hard drive. It is freeware without advanced features (no time limit).
It will make a decrypted iso image on your hard drive that you can open later with VLC. And it's easy to use. It even crossed my mind to buy it, it was that good...

+1 for DVDFab HD Decryper. It's free and pretty easy to use.

However, the DVD images you end up with are pretty large (several GB per disk). Unless you have massive amounts of disk space available on your laptop, you will probably want to compress the DVD files using some audio/video codec. This is fairly complicated though and takes a lot of computing time.

Making quality DVD rips is time-consuming and requires some technological know-how, so unless you are prepared to put in some serious work I would also recommend taking a binder with you.

AutoGK does wonders when it comes to setting things up.
I agree with spindown. Too much work, for not so much convenience. For example, youll be able to watch these movies only on your computer. Maybe where you're going somebody has DVD player?

I'll stick to taking binder for cds. Cheap, easy, convenient.

Decrypting:
DVDFab HD Decrypter
MakeMKV
mplayer2 -dumpstream -dumpfile movie.vob dvd://
DVD Decrypter should still work for most discs

Frameserving:
AviSynth
DGIndex

Encoding:
x264
mencoder
ffmpeg

Muxing:
mkvtoolnix

GUIs:
MeGUI
StaxRip

Depending on where the OP is going, there may be region issues to do with playing DVDs there.

I'd echo Handbrake as a good option, though I can't remember if it decrypts DVDs out of the box. Another option is Digiarty's free DVD ripper, which is competent.
I've tried a few DVD rippers in my time (DVD Decrypter, DVDFAB and others) but by far my favourite is Format Factory. It's completely free and should get those movies onto your HDD with no problems.

Damn, that sounds like an advert...

Handbrake can only encode into MP4 and flatly refuses to touch discs that have any kind of copy protection. Shame, as it's a great program apart from those limitations.
