What about POD? I read there are split screen multiplayer mode.

FraterPerdurabo: M.A.X. is great, though it's been ages since I played it in multiplayer.
Duke Nukem 3D is fantastic.
If you like 4X games then play Call to Power II. I personally don't like it, but I've had a blast playing Civ III in MP.
Painkiller is a fantastic competitive FPS orientated MP game.

Fallout Tactics hasn't aged particularly well as a MP game.

Has anyone tried the Arcanum MP modules?

A_Future_Pilot: If you learn to play it, the Descent series makes excellent multiplayer!

If you grab Rebirth for D1 and D2 it has an EXTREMELY improved multiplayer (which will actually be even better in the next release :)
What type of multiplayer? Deathmatch or...? (Never played Descent)

lowyhong: The following games recommended are supported by Gameranger, and which I have experience playing and really enjoy:

Heroes 3 (supported by GR, but it's best if you're playing hotseat or LAN)

Sacrifice is a lot of fun if you have friends who like RTS/Action hybrids.

Total Annihilation is great for all RTS lovers.

Die by the Sword is fun but only if you have friends who like that sort of thing.

Icewind Dale is really cool, but best if restricted to 2-3 players, preferably 2. 6 players, eh, it's just hard to get coordinated.

Descent 3 is also wicked fun, but you need friends who are willing to sit down and get used to the controls.

Oh yeah Serious Sam is just insane too, but it's the kind of game best played in a LAN setting rather than over Skype or the Internet.

Neverwinter Nights multiplayer is very, very fun but I don't know how to host a game (never tried), and it may be taxing on your laptop.

Valyou: Certainly any Unreal Tournament games. I don't have them yet on GOG, but I've given UT a shot, and simply, wow. When Unreal and the Tournament games were released on GOG, that was the day GOG was fully blessed. :D
I'll put down some other good MP games sometime soon, once I think of some.

Stuff: Here's a list of the GOG mp / co-op games sorted by the tri-genre that GOG assigns. I don't maintain the data other than adding games on release day so there may be one or two mp's missing and probably user ratings have changed as well.

My brother and I use the list when we are deciding what mp to play next. Might be some help to others as well . . . =)

There are a few different types:

D1 & D2:
Anarchy (Every man for himself. Just kill everyone else.)
Team Anarchy (Two teams against each other.)
Robo Anarchy (Every man for himself, plus the default robots of the map.)
Bounty (One man is the target. Whoever kills him gets a point and becomes the target. Every time the target kills someone, the target gets a point.)

D2 only:
Capture the Flag (Two flags, and two teams. Killing someone gets you 1 point, taking a flag to your base gets you 5)
Hoard (Like a cross between bounty and CTF, except when someone dies they drop all the orbs they are carrying plus one. You take all the orbs to the base and you get a multiple of the number of orbs you have.)


General info about Descent...it's a first person shooter inside a space ship. You're flying through mines, and it's fully 3D. Meaning you have 6 axis to control at once. It takes some getting used to, but once you do there's no other game like it! :)

Not sure about savage, since I never played it, but basically you have 3 races, 2 of which (Meccs and Reapers) can have to gather resources and build a base. Base building is pretty boring though, and you can just disable it, starting with either a full base or no base at all (though they'll always be able to build some vehicules/defense towers). Meccs are the Tech guys, with jetpacks and rocket launchers. Reapers have bows and spells, a turbo ability to quickly move around the map and they're the only ones that can swim. Third race is Kabuto and he's basically a giant that can grab and eat other players or throw / kick them around.

In terms of power, the races are purposely unbalanced. I think the most recent (fan?) patch made it so you can have multiple Kabutos in a match, but back when the game was released the maximum number of players for each race in a 3-way match was 5 Meccs, 3 Reapers and one Kabuto. Personally I only found the game fun when we had enough people for a good 3 way match, but if you're looking for something a bit different it's worth checking out.

It has, but you must have keyboard and controller. Unfortunately GoG version of glide2x.dll doesn't support this mode. You must install nGlide and run it with 3Dfx mode. It give better graphic and enable split screen mode, but the biggest inconvenience is you must download the iso from third party sites and mount it and also other minor setup, and also i notice the music is missing.

So if I would get ONE multiplayer game and I am looking for simple fun in general and I dont care about genre of the game...which one that should be?

Neverwinter Nights Diamond allows co-op, too (I think the co-op box is not checked on your list). You can form a party and fight side by side, in the original campaign, multiplayer modules or on persistant worlds (PWs). In fact, most PWs are about co-op gameplay and this is where NWN shines (as opposed to the lame henchmen AI).

Thank for the info, I know there are a few not on the list but NWN's game card (as with the Serious Sam cards) says single-player, multi-player with no mention of co-op.

The list shows mp and co-op GOG games that have the mode listed on their game cards. I wouldn't want to represent a game on the list that GOG does not acknowledge as a multiplayer or co-op game hence the reason they are not listed as such. The list is just a data dump of the modes listed on GOG game cards.

I actually wonder why some games are not marked as mp or co-op but I'm sure GOG has their reasons . . . =)

Edit: If you find one with the mode listed but not on the list I will gladly update and repost the list . . . =D

My best recommendation would be to pick a genre you already like. Find several GOG multi-player games in that genre that support the type of multi-player you're looking for. Pick one or two that will run on your system. Look over the GOG game forum posts for the selected games and search YouTube for multi-player game play videos . . . pick the one you like and start playing . . . =)

My brother and I are playing Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic when we can but not everybody cares for strategy, turned based fantasy games. Over the last year we have jumped from Painkiller to UT2k4 to Sacred Gold to AoW: SM. If I recommend UT2k4 and you get killed every 10 seconds . . . you will not be pleased with my recommendation . . . then again . . . you may kick their butts and really like it . . . =D

lowyhong gave some recommendations I agree with as well.

Masters of Orion is addicting if you have a group of 3-4 players to play with(And a time sink aswell).
