[snip] Obsolote since Ninja JMich said it already.
But I always thought i7 was the only one capable of hyperthreading things.

"hyperthreading" sounds like a new kind of extreme sports or sickness like hyperventilation.

What are you doing tonight? Want to go to the cinema with me?
No thanks I'm already hyperthreading.

@gameon

heheh! didnt check the link / look at the details before - good work!

well, hopefully muffblaster has abetter handle on things tech wise, and some idea of what a ruig like that should run at top spec.

hopefully a spare muff or two too! O_o
avatar
gameon: Then how come the ones i've seen say dual core?
avatar
JMich: i3 is dual core.
i5 is dual core with HyperThreading, 2 physical cores, 4 logical cores.
i7 is quad core with HyperThreading, 4 physical cores, 8 logical cores.
i7 extreme is hexacore with HyperThreading, 6 physical cores, 12 logical cores.
I hope I recall the number of cores correctly.
i actually think several of the i5s have quad - but are outmatched by someof the duals in performance. not sure until i find the bookmark...

WORK BRAIN! WORK!

Thanks. Ideally muffblaster would be better off with a desktop pc for gaming, but with that price range his options are limited. I feel that price to performance with the one i found would be the best option at this moment in time.

Unless anyone else can find a better deal for a quad core with a proper graphics card.

Quick look at wikipedia shows that i5 exists in both dual and quad mechanic, so both cases are correct/wrong. But for gaming, i3 is usually enough, with i5 if you wish to do a few more stuff. At least until programmers learn to multithread their code :/

Depends of the socket and or chipsets mostly, for 1155 is up to 4 cores but 2011 can be up to 8 cores (Xeon) (and IRC there was some 6 core for old 1366 and some 8 Xeon for also old 1356). The Extreme editions are high frequency, overclock friendly, CPU but they are not necessarily the ones with the most cores.

Exactly what I wanted to say...

Ninjad again...

Damn maybe I should spend more time hyperthreading to type even faster... ;-)

@gameon
perhaps true, but a good head for tech / interest in that end of things is a benefit when you have a desktop for tweaking etc. either the model i have or the one you suggested shouldnt have too many problems with games for a good while though - particularly considering muffblaster has been playing a back catalogue from gog on a creaky netbook.

@muffblaster
im sure if i can run desu ex human revolution at top spec without lag etc, then the model gameon has suggested (or same spec) would do fine for time to come - you no doubt have a lot of games youve missed out on playing from recent years as well!

EDIT: heheh! - seen the replies whislt i was typing this through drooping eyelids! heheh. +1 everyone!

I have a Lenovo Y570. It's the best laptop I've ever owned. I love it.

I just upgraded my wife's laptop to the Lenovo Y580:

http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:item.detail?GroupID=457&Code=20998NU
you guys rock! i

ideally i need to blast 100 muffs per second and gameons suggestion looks good i must say.
i feel like i have learned some good stuff here. all suggestions are still welcome :)
ive been living (happily) in the dark ages with games. fallout 1 + 2 + tactics, arcanum and a whole bunch of RPG games from the last 30 years on a dell netbook running xp with people trying to skype me in the background .its been hell. the only way is up from here.

looks like not many people are selling the HP Pavilion g6-2230

none on Ebay and i would be extremely hesitant over buying from PC World.

is it a slightly older model?

i can just about manage this current deal on Ebay:

Acer Aspire 5755G - Intel Core i7 Quad Core, 6GB RAM, 500GB HDD, Nvidia GT630M

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/251157891004?item=251157891004

much bang for buck? (ill be honest i was partially drawn in by the war emanating from the screen)

there are some other nice looking models i have seen on ebay at a similar price but they offer integrated graphics card. which i understand is not a good thing

also, im interested to know why this has intergrated graphics card despite being worth £800
am i getting the wrong end of the stick?
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/251187970525?item=251187970525
it looks great. but the specs seem a bit underwhelming. is it a trade off for the groovy design?

Look, this is a website that lists graphic cards and ranks them by performance: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html

As you can see, neither the Nvidia GT630 or the Radeon 7640G rank very high, but that's to be expected in your budget (the graphic card is always one of the most expensive components of a laptop). They both seem decent choices.

Naming conventions are a little chaotic but there is a certain method to it. For example, in the case of Nvidia. the first digit is the generation; the second is a reference to its power. 1-2 are very basic cards. 3 has more multimedia power. 4 and 5 can be quite good at gaming. 6 is very powerful, but still reasonably priced. 7-8-9 are usually very expensive and only for the enthusiast.

My card is a 460; as the 4 implies, it's 2 generations older than the 630 you mention. But, if you look for it on that chart, you'll see that it's much higher ranked than the 630, despite being a 2 year old graphic card. So you can get an idea about the performance of a graphic card just by looking at its name. Hope this helps.

EDIT: The computer in your second link is an ultrabook. It's lighter, has better battery life, it's very thin... Those are great qualities, especially if you carry your laptop around with you, but don't matter when it comes to gaming.

You don't need i7. Good graphics card is more important for gaming than i7 processor. And the 630M is just a rebranded old GT 540M. Get the Acer V3 with i5 and 640M, it has 50% faster graphic card over the GT 630M.

Light
Durable
Long Battery Life

There is more to notebooks than just HURR MOAR GHZ AND GB DURR.
God no, why are you people suggesting him intel processors when the majority of games, especially when considering a laptop for THAT amount of money, require at worst, a good to decent GPU?!?!?

Scrap all these ridiculous i5-i7 suggestions and invest in a AMD trinity processor. They are designed to net good cpu perf with great gpu performance. Good luck with an intel series 4000 gpu in 6 months, the driver support (optimization) is bad.

http://www.notebookcheck.net/

Anyone, anyone who wants a good laptop, or advice about laptops, get familiar with this site.

Now I would recommend this laptop. you get samsung level of quality with a damn good gpu, plus a desirable design:

http://www.ebuyer.com/391962-samsung-355v5c-laptop-np355v5c-s01uk

High spec, webcam, and a hefty 8gb of ram. Plus a massive 1tb of HDD.

The gpu is something too: http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Radeon-HD-7660G-HD-7670M-Dual-Graphics.81173.0.html

The perf of that ebay acer with the gt630 is laughably bad, worse then the one that's 50£ cheaper.

With nvidia, anyhting less then a gt650/ 550 is not worth it.
thanks for all the advice. its much appreciated.
