McDon: It must be a game series so no Lord of the Rings....
Mine is Fallout, mainly to prove it's not all lore is fantasy
Well, you stole mine. Seriously, anyone who doesn't know how crazy-fun the lore gets needs to head on over to Fallout Wiki and No Mutants Allowed.

cbean85: Uuuuummmmmm...Star Wars?

Yeah, I'm that guy!

But seriously...I like the Fallout lore. The entire alternate history and what that brings to the games is just awesome.

Oslin007: Halo!!?!? Amazed that no one mentioned it, it is actually GREAT and I have dived in to a lot of game lore
You know, now that you mention it, it's amazing what kind of lore came out of a shooter, even a very good shooter, like that. Yeah, Halo is probably the best lore we'll ever get out of a shooter. I'm specifically talking about lore, as opposed to game play or atmosphere, lots of games have great versions of both of the latter.

The Dungeons and Dragons Lore from Forgotten Realms.

Tarm: I'm a sucker for Forgotten Realms. Been since I played the first game in that world.
+1 to this guy!

Best lore of "game"?

Well if not limited to computer games, then deffo:

-The old original Warhammer Fantasy Roleplaying Old world.
-Cyberpunk 2020
-Shadowrun
-Heimot roolipeli (scifi roleplaying, in finnish only I am afraid)
-Praedor (Fantasy PnP ,in finnish only)

If computer, well I dont think they generally compare to PnP worlds.

Jade Empire, Fallout, Deus ex, Mass Effect (ive played 1 and 2), Arcanum, Dark Souls (minimalist, but still), Ultima, Dead Space (as world, it would make nice horror set), Half-Life and Portal. Freespace and Independence War and pretty intresting set ups as well.

Well, with time I could undoubtedly rememeber more proper rpgs with big worlds, but in general different game worlds and lores interest me for different reasons. Some because they are so huge and detailed - others because they are so vague and mysterious, that you can only open them ever so slowly.

Jade Empire's world was quite epic, but I am afraid they are not going to be making more of that any time soon. Great game.

Even though jade empire was a very cool game it didn't sell as much as 1568th game with elves and dwarves and it also didn't have massive advertising campaign as mass effect so it's very unfortunate that it probably won't have a sequel because of low sales and players who refuse to play anything looking at least a bit different.
Warcraft

The sheer scale and scope of that Universe is bigger than anything I've seen

Actually, I disagree on Fallout. Only with the Fallout bible they tried somehow to connect the dots. With F1 they had no intention of creating the overspanning lore arc. And it shows. F3 tried to do a better job, but ultimately failed on other fronts (shoehorning the Super Mutants into the capital wasteland). With F:NV and the Fallout bibles we finally have something of a lore ...
I think lore that made the biggest impression on me would be Half-Life. This is taking into account that (personally) the lore of the game is in effect the culture of a game, so aesthetics do have a part to play.

Half life has history, unique technologies, alien races with established back-stories...a wonderful amount of detail for a FPS. I've seen videos inspired by the game, plenty of fan fiction. Suffice to say the lore of the game has inspired many people, which goes to show how good it is.

isn't it all about orcs&co. hassling humans&friends because they themselves are being hassled by big bad demons?

Well it may seem that way at first glance but once you actually get into everything...it's a completely different story

It may all seem simple and all revolving around Metzen's "Fetish for corruption" but in reality it goes much, much deeper than that
Homeworld Homeworld Homeworld Homeworld.

Homeworld.

(Dammit THQ, put them on GoG already. It's almost like you don't want money.)

Well Christmas sales are here or atleast coming - hopefully everyone will be now wiser and buy Jade Empire at discount. Its sold atleast at Steam and definitely worth even the current full price.

I think Jade Empire has the most unique setting of all Bioware games.

As game, well sure the character stat/skill developement is too deep - but the action was fluid and the story itself was Epic. I wish they made more daring games like it.

I remember that game, it was certainly different than other Bioware games and I really enjoyed, will definitely see if it falls on a good sale the next couple of weeks.
