Didn't we already have a 50 page thread on this same topic? But anyway, its always a good subject.
But how has no one mentioned the Mechwarrior intros??

My absolute favorite is the intro for Final Fantasy VIII for pc. Awesome graphics, a definite storyline, and combined with the orchestrated music by a famous composer (enough that people actually buy the game music separately) combines to make the best game intro I've ever seen. (Though ALL of the cutscenes in this game are really good.)
I had bought the game in the past without knowing anything about it solely BECAUSE of the intro. Too bad GOG.com doesn't have this game, if they did, I'd buy it in a heartbeat because my disks were officially KO'd and you can't buy it hardly anywhere these days.

M15aNtHrOpE: There are two that really stand out:
1) Myst 4: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwqK5QKoTEs&feature=related
2) Abe's Oddysee: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2EDJbIyzpo

Yeah, mine has to be Abe's oddysee. "Hello, my name is Abe..."
Nobody has mentioned the epic intro of Heart of Darkness ! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9MclIvXqkn8&feature=related... Dog kidnapped by a blackhole ! home-made space ship ! ship crash ! Awesome music !

rob.liefeld: Lucasarts made the best cinematic adventure games, with some of the best cinematic intros ever.
Someone already mentioned Full Thorttle, but do not forget the amazing DOTT:

or Curse of Monkey island (the way the camera pans still sends chills down my spine)ű

Grim fandango is probably the funniest ever.

Agreed, Lucasarts ones are my all time favourites. Nothing beats DOTT, Sam & Max and Grim Fandango for me, I won't ever forget them. And I mean it, I still remember the whole dialogs to the letter after years and years. :)
Number four would be the intro of Diablo II for me, and the whole list of cinematics for that matter.
Dawn of War
Dawn of war, of course.
I-War will permanently have my vote for the best game intro ever created.
Sure, there are more modern games with better-looking intros (I agree that Dawn of War's is awesome), and I don't want to take anything away from the artists who create them, but with the budgets that get thrown at games these days this is to be expected.
I-War wins because at a time when the typical good intro was no more than a minute or two of decent-quality rendering most likely accompanied by some fairly dodgy voice acting, it turned up and blew everything else out of the water with a staggering 14 minutes of jaw-on-floor eye candy, with no more than a couple of notable hiccups in the writing/acting departments.
And not only was it stunning to watch, but it was also relevant to the plot and, in the combat sequences, actually pretty faithful to the gameplay.
Also, it wasn't just the intro... I-War was generous with its FMV, and maintained the same high quality (if not the length :) throughout the game.
The gaming landscape has changed a lot since then. It saddens me to think that space simulators of I-War's ilk have all but died out, and the chances of ever seeing another production of that quality within the genre is next to zero.
And added appreciation for some others that have already been listed:
* Archimedean Dynasty (man, I haven't seen that in years... thanks, Lone3wolf)
* Thief: The Dark Project (Looking Glass' finest intro sequence)
* MechWarrior 2 (often imitated, but never with quite the same impact)
* Mafia (really well scored)
* Heart of Darkness (another jaw-dropper)

that... Looks so awesome I want to play it.
I would like to join in the praise of Beyond Good & Evil, and Curse of Monkey Island (which is still my favorite game of the series). The intros to both games were great, in their own way; BG&E blows me away every time, and I still giggle at the Curse of Monkey Island intro, even after a decade of playing the game.
Since I play mostly console games, I'll add a few to the mix:
Shadow Hearts Covenant
Final Fantasy VII
Xenosaga Episode II (Part I) Xenosaga Episode II (Part II)
My newest favorite is the intro to Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time
I also like the intros to Beneath a Steel Sky and The Longest Journey, but I won't post them, simply because they are available here on GOG.
PS - After seeing the intro, I need to play Vagrant Story. Now. C'mon, PSN, put it up for purchase, c'mon!!!
I wholeheartedly agree with some of the games on this list - particularly Thief.
I'll just add these for setting the mood or plot up perfectly:-
System Shock
Ultima VI
ICO
The original C&C even the installer itself felt like an intro. God I miss Westwood!
