I really like the intro to Batman: Arkham Asylum.
Oh my gosh, Mortal Kombat: Armageddon is probably my favorite ever. Way,way over the top and it has pretty much every character ever.

Fenixp: I did not, but if it's what do you say it is, I can see why Valve didn't use it. I mean, it doesn't fit with G-Man at all, he tends to give you only basic information on ... Anything

Oh god no, it would never have worked with the chracter. Though he only explains "everything" in the sense of, "This is everything that happened in the past few years," I was just saying that it sounded like it would have been really visually stunning, like Princess Mononoke or something. The real inrto for Half Life 2 is probably among my favorites (Intro, being, everything up to Kleiner's lab.) simply because of how it explains things. The opening vista with the Citadel framed by the train station supports is something you usually would only see in a movie-it looks fantastic, even 5 years later.
I don't remember the "best" , but I love these :
Freespace II , Freelancer and Full Throtle... and sure others...
These intros , I love watch.. and watch.. and watch.... lot of times I installed the games just to see the intro, mainly Freespace II and Freelancer.

Mascott: For current games with current levels of writing talent and technology, I'm going to go with Bioshock. Whether the intro was real or not, it lays out enough exposition for you to be lied to. (The statute of limitations is up on that one-we can talk about it.)

fuNGoo: Did no one mention the tram ride through Black Mesa yet? Although it's a little long and drawn out before letting you into the action, the first time I booted up Half-life, I was just amazed at how pretty and dynamic everything that was going on around me was.

Ah, Black Mesa Inbound, it's good to see you again my old friend. I play through Half Life maybe once a year and the beginning is probably my favorite bit.
Speaking of that, has anyone else read Marc Laidlaw's extended opening for Half Life 2? It was supposed to be in the original version with the Air Exchange and what not, I believe it was in Raising the Bar. It had the G-Man explain everything. Flowers sprout up around his feet and die, the sky changes from clouds to storms-it was pretty incredible, and I would have loved to have seen it.

Cannot really agree with the Bioshock 'interactive' intro, purely on the basis that you are told by the 'voice' in the Bathysphere how dangerous it all is, and then you see through the window that the person he sent to get you has no weapon! This guy is about the only one in the whole game with no weapon! Him pleading for the Splicer to spare him felt very hollow to me. I would have been cursing either my stupidity or the 'voice' for sending me! :)

ldonyo: My favorites are from Planescape: Torment and The Witcher.

Planescape didn't have much of an intro IMO. However, I will absolutely say that it had an ending!

OMG the first 10 minutes in HL2 are the best. Did you overhear the NPC conversations? WOW.

I get what you mean. I suppose i'm not doing it right-i'm looking at the overall experience of the game and how the intro ends up fitting into that rather than just the intro itself. I've got a difference definition of Intro as well, being that it should be the first real taste of the overall game you get-if a game can get that across in a cutscene, that's fine. For me, Bioshock's intro would be everything up to and including the Big Daddy encounter.
Though in the defense of that bit of Bioshock, you're supposed to feel that way, being completely without a choice-and getting even more nitpicky, the reason Johnny was pleading for the splicer not to kill him was because he normally didn't need a weapon. People respected Fontaine's power, so he wouldn't need to defend himself.
I've played through Bioshock enough times to make anyone I talk to think i've read Atlas Shrugged.
The original Fallout game's intro. The 1950's flair and music really set the tone for a humorous, yet dark game.
The best just got better. Someone has finally uploaded the Namco X Capcom intro in decent quality enjoy. How many characters can you name?
I like Quake 3 intro that things makes me go online and frag people...!!

Cool intro.
Hmmm.....GTA 4 had a pretty decent intro. Maybe Mass Effect...
It doesn't compare to the likes of the fallout and independence war series but I'm surprised nobody's mentioned Total Annihilation's Intro yet.
"What began as a conflict over the transfer of conciousness from flesh to machines escalated into a war which has decimated a million worlds...."
