Tarm: By saying that Quake is my choice. It was the first FPS I played with free move and look. No game have captured that Being There feeling quite like that afterwards. There are certainly better atmospheric games but for me that game will always stand out in that regard.

F4LL0UT: Well, only if you played the original version including the music (by Trent Reznor). I must admit that the first version I played was a pirated copy a friend gave me, then I played the Steam version which also lacks the music by default. Without the music it just felt like some weird 3D experiment to me. Thanks to the Ultimate Patch that some user provided in the Steam forums I finally got a chance to play it with the music two years ago or so and only then Quake turned into that incredibly atmospheric surreal experience - it totally blew my mind.
My first playthrough was also with a pirated copy. I was so fascinated by it that I immediately went out and bought it after the playthrough and yes, the music makes a real difference. :)

LiquidOxygen80: I know this is probably blasphemy and I'm quite alone in my view, but I was actually largely disappointed by Quake. Maybe just because after all the hype, it couldn't possibly live up to what I had pictured in my head. Real 3D, soundtrack by Reznor, dark and moody? OKAY SIGN ME UP! Oh wait, most of the levels looked and felt the same to me, everything in brown and darker colors. Maybe I was just used to bright, colorful, "in your face" games like Duke, then having Unreal come out and not only be pretty, but wide open.
I'm not surprised. If I remember correct at the time there was a great deal of rivalry between the games fans. Some liked Quake, others liked Unreal and there was much bitching between them. Fan wars isn't something new. :)

Yah, Sanitarium.

I also thought F.E.A.R. was good with the spooky, despite being a shooter.

The original "Resident Evil" and "Silent Hill" back when they came out. Haven't played them in a long time so I don't know what I'd think now.

Phantasmagoria back when it came out.

Try Gothic 1 or 2. Take a trip to the forest at night or a cave/tomb...now that is some nice experience right there...I have the game OST and sometime listen to it, when I hear the music fromt he mines, man i get chills down my spine.

Deus Ex has nice futuristic feel about it.

Thief 1 and 2 will give you put you in a nice mood.

No game that I have played has better atmosphere than Thief: The Dark Project.
Honourable mention to the Bloodmoon expansion of Morrowind.

The best, maybe not but it's damn good. You questioning super metroid let's me wonder what you find atmospheric....

If you are into steampunk the Thief games are as good as it gets for atmosphere. Especially 2, although I never understood why they modeled the bad guy after Truman Capote. I love Capote; I love all of his books; I just never heard him talk and thought 'Arch Villian'!

Hands down Metro 2033

It filled me with a sense of amazment, it was massivly atmopseric and right now free copies!

After metro its The Chronicles of Riddick games

Playing that game was a breath fo fresh air. It pulled me into the world of Riddick and held me there. Never really allowing me to pull out of the lore it spun around the world.

next would be Fallout: new Vegas

everystep every area it all meshed together and just made sense... it was beutifully done and a wonderful game

but the best, and i mean the absolute best game that's ever existed for pure mind blowing amazingness is

Shadows of Colossus...

I really cant say much more than that... In your life, if you call yourself a gamer in any regard and you must find a way to experience this game...

As it was mentioned prior i'll Second Unreal 1, breathtaking when i first stepped off the ship and saw the world....

For pure intense terror, Dead Space... This is mah GAME! The only thing to inject fear so deep that i cant sleep was the original marine campaign for Alien vs Predator

lastly Tron 2.0... it was beautifully done and it really felt like you were in the world of Tron, great memories their....

I'd say Call of Pripyat with the atmosfear mod. Seeing the sky turn when you're sodding miles from adequate shelter is a real drop everything and run moment.

True, but you can get blowouts in SoC with mods like AMK, and I think there's a version of atmosfear for SoC too.

Either way though, both games are great, particularly in the atmosphere department. Not sure about Clear Sky though, I didn't play that one much.
