Blood
Hmm... I wonder if Deus Ex should count as a shooter...

if so, it would be a top choice as well.
XIII -- artistically sound and very beautiful... a highly underrated game as well.... a must have for any fan of shooters.

Bodkin: I'll just write my TOP 5 FPS from GOG:

TOP 5:
1) Blood
2) UT
3) XIII
4) Duke 3D
5) Serious Sam: Second Encounter

Worst 5:
1) Shogo
2) Painkiller
3) Far Cry
4) Blood 2
5) Sniper Elite(?)
Sniper elite is an excellent game, but it is not a shooter. It's like calling Deus Ex or System Shock 2 a bad shooter.

I'm still hoping for a sequel ... one can dream.

jefequeso: (wow... this took me about an hour to write)
But it was worth it, that should be linked to whenever somebody looks for a shooter.

Well, since I agree with the most and am currently bored a bit, I'm going to supplement you there:

XIII - Basically, it's cartoony goodness with serious balance issues and great + well told story. If you value story in your shooters, do get this, but also keep in mind that you'll have to get trough quite a few annoying stealth passages and that you'll hit some difficulty spikes. Other than that, this game is truly fantastic, from it's style to it's mechanics. Just so we're clear as to how awesome it is: When you score a good hit, this happens. You get 3 comic-like frames detailing your opponent's death. Damn satisfying. And I'm not even mentioning that most sounds are accompanied by on-screen text like 'KABOOM!'

Chaser - Chaser is good for one thing: It's length. It's really, really long, it's got plenty of weapons, and gets quite variable as well. However, while different areas are really varied, the level themselves are not. When you enter an area, you often just walk trough the pretty much same corridor until you get to the next level. Also there are some collision detection issues where you can't go trough 2mm high rubble on the floor, and enemies instantly react to your presence and are 100% accurate, which is annoying. 4/10, would not bang.

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon - Now this one is a treat. Tactical military shooter. It's not as realistic as, say, ArmA: Cold War Crisis, but it sure has it's moments. You play as one of the guys from tactical unit, deployed for specific tasks - and it's up to you how do you decide to aproach them. Maps are usually quite big and open, you can pick loadout and soldiers before every mission, and when you're in-mission, you can give orders to your guys and your 'direct control' between them - so, at one moment you can be sniper, at another you can switch to your heavy weapon specialist and spray enemies with bullets.

Missions are quite diverse, game's not exactly easy since one hit usually means that you die, and it requires some tactical thinking on your part. I do recommend this one, but only if you have already played IMO superior ArmA: Cold war assault.

Unreal 2 - it tried to repeat success of the first game. It failed. While it's not actually a bad game, it's just not very interesting - it's quite a bland sci-fi shooter with some nice ideas (deployable turrets) and crazy difficulty curve. You won't actually miss anything if you just skip this one, really.

I can´t understand why you inlude Unreal 2 on the list then... Or you´re just talking about the ones you played?

That's because I was trying to fill horrible jefequeso's gaps in education.
Unreal Gold stands out, in my opinion. Unreal Tournament, Rainbow Six, Duke3D and Blood also fall into mind.
I really thoroughly enjoyed Painkiller - Great level design, lots of variety in environments, well-balanced set of weapons, interesting enemy design, nice visuals - despite being relatively old now.

I haven't finished the expansion yet though :( Hopefully I'll get around to it soon.

jefequeso: Shogo, Painkiller, and Far Cry are worse than Blood 2???
You've got the point. I put first three and than start searching GOG'log for others. Blood 2 is truly the worst.

Well, SE is bad with sniping and stealth and it also is bad with shooting mens of war, when the game spawn several closecombateers near your location. I really wanted to like it, but the AI is evil. EVIL!

Heh, guess I will have to give Painkiller another chance, since so many people here like it! Maybe I missed something...

About its soudtrack, yeah the music is good but for it doesn't fit the game, that's why I was so critical about it.

The game is fun just a little to repetitive for me

Repetitive is not really a problem since I'm a huge fan of Serious Sam! ;)
My top 5 favourite FPS games available on GOG would have to include:

- Unreal Gold
- Far Cry
- Unreal Tournament GOTY
- Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon
- Tom Clancy's Rainbow SIx

jefequeso: I disagree that Serious Sam is closer to classic shooters. Both Painkiller and Serious Sam are actually pretty far removed from games like Doom or Duke3d in some ways. For instance, I don't think I've played a single 90s FPS that spawned in mobs of enemies in gigantic arenas like Serious Sam does. Painkiller does the same thing, but to a lesser extent. Likewise, Serious Sam is quite linear and directed, to the point where some doors are impossible to open once they've closed behind you. There's no open exploration of levels, no backtracking, and no real hunting for keycards. Painkiller is a little more traditional in this regard. While doors will close on you when you enter a room for the first time, you can easily explore the level once you've killed all enemies to look for secrets, or backtrack after a particularly nasty encounter to try and find some hidden health (if you're playing on harder difficulties).
Indeed, i'm not sure that arena shooters were something that was technologically possible during the classic era without going back to Wolf3d style ray-casting and orthogonal walls. The memory requirements on arena shooters like that have always been higher than for corridor shooters and probably always will be.
