If you want to go old school, Redneck Rampage and Blood. For a more recent game, UT2K4 is the best.

For multiplayer I'm gonna say UT2k4, but for single-player, I have to go with Descent 1+2. I love the Descent games, and there's rarely been anything like them. There are lots of great shooters here, though, not the least of which is today's new release, Blood.

For sheer multiplayer or quick 5 mins play UT 4 is best. Painkiller is also good fun.

I'd go for Duke Nukem forever or Unreal, although there are a lot of games I haven't played at all. Painkiller is also awesome, as is UT2004 (my personal favourite of the UT games). I guess I'll have to bet on Duke once again. :P

domgrief: I will thoroughly recommend UT2004, but mostly because of the vast quantity of mods available.
The single player campaign (basically a simulated multiplayer mode a ladder) is acceptable and the variety in maps is great, but add in Deathball, Alien Swarm and Metaball and you'll be entertained for weeks.

It changed over the time...
First: There was errrrr, Operation Flashpoint.
Second: UT99
Third: DN3D
Fourth: today, Blood has the FPS throne.
And this throne will change again, for the fifth time, when Shadow Warrior arrives on GOG.

This, only I'd swap UT2k4 for UT99.
