So I decided to play Daggerfall. Never played it before and it's free now, so why not? I downloaded the game and realized that it is not already wrapped in Dosbix like GOG games are, so I downloaded and installed that too.

At this point, I think I'm going to want to use a front end since I don't feel like configuring things with a Dos prompt. Any preferences? I think I'll primarily be playing on my W7 PC, but might occasionally play on my Debian netbook as well. The front end doesn't have to be cross platform, however. If you're favorite is Windows or Linux only, that's fine too.
DBGL.

Not playing Daggerfall, but I do use D-Fend Reloaded for my old Dos games.
A good frontend for DOSBox is no damn frontend at all. In the DOS times we didn't use frontends XD

*Well, I used QuickTime III on my 286 but that's a completely different story*

We used SNAP menu system for my 286 back in the day......it was mainly for my parents tho. I navigated to my games witht he CLI. To cool for frontends. ;)
Frontend for DOSBox ? HERESY !

On a more serious note, D-Fend Reloaded is good IMO.

Ah, but did you apply DOS level settings like AA? TBH, I know my way around a bash prompt fairly well, just never really dealt with DOS to much (our first computer was Win 3.1).

Also interesting. What is the CompUSA pack mentioned there?

It's a special promotional add-on that adds new quests, items, NPCs, etc. It's the closest the game got to any sort of expansion.
Notepad. :p

Read the whole config file, and you'll understand the lines. :)

Weirdos. Doing it manually sucks, no matter how retro it is.

Exactly, no DOS experience required, everything can be set in the config. Then, just do as GOG does and set up DosBox shortcut that calls the new edited config file for that game instead of the default template. After that, it works just like any other game, superficially. It took me all of about 15 minutes of skimming the DosBox wiki to do this successfully for a couple games.

I agree. I was doing it manually for about 30 minutes...then I found D-Fend and never went back.

Doing it manually is sexy, using frontends is for newfags. No matter how speedy your system is XD

Well if you're an apparent "newfag" like me, and want a nice box art-based frontend, check out LaunchBox.
