I'd have to say Arcanum, it's just incredible.
If you do plan to get it, I heartily suggest you check out the mods, the high res and HQ town maps is a must!
Hope this helps.
I'd say Duke Nukem 3D and Arx Fatalis.
Just to go against everybody else's choices I'm gonna go with the Ishar collection and the Robinson's Requiem collection.
But if you like like FPS go with Duke 3D.
One of my personal favorites.
my picks are empire earth and divine divinity. And I also enjoy Arcanum a lot , but I haven't gotten far enough in it to declare that there are no problems with it

tor: Useful link: All .99 games ordered by rating.
My opinion: probably Freespace 2. Duke Nukem 3D and Simon the Sorcerer 1+2 are also strong contenders.

Arcanum has only been here two weeks and its in the top 5 - Get it now!

I'd go for Freespace or VTM Redemption just from the sheer amount of play I got out of them
Hey guys thanks for the suggestions! when i decide to get something i'll be sure to keep in mind all the games you mentioned.
Freespace 2 and Duke Nukem 3D
Fallout series
Jagged Alliance 2

The rest I cannot comment on due to not playing them in my youth.
Heroes of Might and Magic III

Might and Magic pack.

Gexecuter: The Guild gold
I LOVE YOU.
Here are a few $5.99s that you don't own, and that I'm surprised haven't been mentioned yet (EDIT: no wonder :p):

Blood - as good as, if not better than, Duke Nukem 3D. A fantastic shooter.

Master of Magic - possibly my all-time favorite strategy game. Incredibly replayable.

Age of Wonders - Master of Magic blended with HoMM. Fantastic stuff for strategy fans.
