hey ya'll
much like the scifi t.v. show thread, I figured we could talk about scifi movies.
underdog ones, preferably, not some of this triple a title carp that every one knows about.
Here's one for size, Gattaca, it's a fantastic movie..
it is a commentary on genetic engineering, and that no matter your predisposition it's what you do in life, not how you're born, that makes you great.

I'm usually surprised by the amount of people I know who have not watched "12 Monkeys" by Terry Gilliam. And while we are on Mr. Gilliam, I also recommend "Brazil". Both films have a different take on the dystopia theme.
Not sci-fi in the stereotyped publics eyes, but if you are after something a little different, they are recommended.

Yeah nothing worse than AAA fish...
I've got a major love for 1950s-60s sci-fi B Movies, they're just some of the best films ever. Often hilarious, rarely intentional but if you let yourself go you usually get a good story out of them.
Good examples of underrated classics
The Day The Earth Stood Still (the REAL one, with actors rather than keanu reeves)
The War Of The Worlds (the REAL one, with actors rather than tom cruise)
THEM!
Invasion Of The Bodysnatchers (classic communist paranoia)
Fiend Without A Face
Destination Moon
Oh and of course Duck & Cover, anything that implies that ducking beneath a wooden school desk or lying down in a gutter will protect you from an exchange of nuclear weapons has got to be either science fiction or fantasy
The Thirteenth Floor
Pitch Black
K-Pax (it's sort of sci-fi, I guess)
The Returner
Mind you, I liked the latest War of the Worlds more than the original movie, perhaps because I grew up with Jeff Wayne's musical version and prefer tripod based walking machines to ones that fly.

Beware! Nerd-Talk ahead:
The movie's name is "Gattaca". The name is composed only of the abbreviations for the four nucleobases found in DNA (Adenine, Cytosine, Guanine and Thymine).
I really LOVE "Contact" and "Blade Runner". The former for it's hard-scifi storyline, the latter for its atmosphere, visuals and music.

Yup, nerdy to admit but I knew that myself. I must get around to getting that movie one day, I've aways thought that any movie with a reference like that in the title can't be all bad.
Logan's Run is another damned fine sci-fi movie

Old-schooler, eh? :D But to be fair, Keanu Reeves wasn't that bad in The Day The Earth Stood Still (I've seen it just yesterday in cinema).
Anyway, favourite scifi?
La Jetée . Seriously, I love that movie.
And Equilibrium. Don't know WHY I like so much this B-production... Guess it's just cool
Ghost in the shell, not sure if it's sci-fi though
In fairness I've not seen the remake of day the earth stood still but I have seen keanu reeves in other things and haven't liked him once. I can't imagine he'd compare favourably to micheal rennie.
Well, in that case, do NOT go and see it, it's seriously not worth it, unless you have nothing better to do or are a cinema freak like me :D
You make a persuasive argument, bugger that then, I'll buy somthing else from GOG

Isn't that a movie composed of still images or something? Only heard of it in the context of "12 monkeys".

I'd say Cyberpunk is Sci-Fi. Great Movie.

Anyone remember that old Japanese flick by the name of "Gargantua"? I used to love that film back in the day....
The old "1984" movie was quite true to the original, I think. I loved seeing how well the 2 Minutes Hate was rendered with the technology of the time.

I get annoyed by most triple A scifi romps because 9O% of the budget goes to sfx and the other 10% to the actors.
The scripts are usually severely dumbed down, pretty faces are preferred over decent actors and a whole lot of standard-hollywood cliches must at all cost be included even if they would not make sense in the setting.
I also get annoyed by B sci-fi romps when they rely to much on sfx, yet do not have the budget to render them properly. Many Sci-Fi Channel productions suffer from this.
I rather have abandoned industrial complexes with somewhat believable characters or if they really want to go over the top I prefer camp over dreadfully rendered computer images
Oh, I forgot to mention, Eraserhead is another fantastic movie.

Logan's Run... +1 to you for that. It is one of my all-time favorite movies (hmmm, must add to NetFlix queue).

Best.... fight scenes... ever. The last 20 minutes of the movie is one continuous fight scene that just gets better and better as it continues. Definitely a movie I put on my top ten list.
In the "old school" category, I gotta mention Forbidden Planet; the sci-fi take on Shakespeare's "The Tempest" that set the gold standard for sci-fi films of the 50's .
